Thread: .me vs .com

    .me vs .com

    Hi
I am in the process of rebuilding my portfolio (personal site). I am confused which domain to go for?
I can either opt for myname.me (such as joxocafeco.me), or go with a .com variant like iammyname.com or mynamehere.com (myname.com is taken, sadly).
What do you recommend? Which one should I go for? Something like joxocafeco.me or something like iamjoxocafeco.com (iammyname.com) types?
Also, I'll be registering both and using 301 redirects. But I can't decide which one should be my primary domain (the one I print on business card etc) -- .me or .com?

iamjoxocafeco.com would be more ideal option as your primary domain if you are representing your business. I will recommend a .com domain.

    Hi,

Just to be sure, I am a freelance developer/coder, so this blog/site is gonna be a personal portfolio. Thus, it will represent my business, but it's only a one-man shop.

A .com would be better. Everybody knows the .com and it ranks world wide.

Yep, that's what I have been thinking.
Just that, I read somewhere that a smaller domain name is always better, so I was wondering if myname.me would be better than thisismyname.com since the former is smaller.

Go for .com or for your own country's ccTLD if it's in common use in your country (.ca is in common use, .us isn't...). Don't go for another country's ccTLD. (In case you didn't realise .me is Montenegro, no matter what some people are trying to sell it as)

I recommend going for a .com extension. Short domains are better since they are easy to remember and type, but also .com extension is better than other extensions.

It would be ideal to find a short, easy to remember and spell .com domain.

Oh I didn't know that .me was considered a ccTLD. I thought it was ranked as gTLD, considering all the hype around it. I have no clients in Montenegro. :O
Basically, I have two choices (both based on my first name), and not sure which one to print on my business card:
    1. sylvanism.com
    2. sylvan.me
sylvan.com would've been ideal, but it's taken (so are .net and .org). My surname is near-impossible to spell right, so I'd not prefer having that in the domain.
This is just gonna be a one-pager portfolio meant only for business card etc.

Expert recommendations is always to go with the .com . .me is also fine but the reputation looks more professional with the .com domain.

.me sounds great! I like seeing it used.

also search engines don’t read the domain extension as having any keyword relevance

If you do a really good job of branding and selling yourself, it's not going to matter.

I'd stick with .com. People are going to remember .com, not so much .me.

I'd rather have a poor .com than a good .me. I think some basic users get confused by strange domains like.me .fm etc...

Basic users either use search engine to find the site of copy it down type it in the address bar or the search bar and bookmark it if they like it. I've seen many of them type gmail to get to their emails.

Those people don't care about .com .me or even .su they literally don't see them.

Why not have both? If you have both then you can give the .me if you wanted and the normal person that always uses .com would find you.

I personally like .com domain names the best and like said they are known worldwide so that helps people remember your website.
