Chinese Buyers Continue to Boost High End Domain Sales - Their Latest Chart Topper Banked Nearly $200,000

Well heeled Chinese buyers have taken over the upper reaches of the 2014 domain sales charts, accounting for more than half of the year's top ten sales including 2014's biggest transaction to date MI.com at $3.6 million in April.

Their latest salvo came this week when Tou.com sold for CNY 1.2 million ($194,400) on Chinese sales platform Fumi.com. Our Chinese market expert, George Hong of Guta.com, who verified the sale, told us "tou" is a Chinese pinyin with multiple meanings including "invest" and he believes the domain will most likely be used for an investment related site.

While the Tou.com sale ranks among the 30 biggest public transactions this year, no other reported sales approached six figures this week. The runner-up spot on our latest weekly all extension Top 20 Sales Chart went to Sedo's $30,420 sale of Lurk.com.

By Ron Jackson

Sedo claimed the next four spots on the leader board as well. They filled the #3 position with the week's biggest ccTLD sale, Swiss domain Liberty.ch at $28,140 and followed with the top two non .com gTLD sales - #4 Europe.org at $23,000 and #5 TTS.net at $18,000.

One of the few non-Sedo sales on the chart was #7 FlyRouge.com, a domain that changed hands for $17,000 in a private transaction (Rouge is a budget airline operated by Air Canada). Nidoma.com also got on the board with #10 Fumetti.it at $12,060. That Italian domain was one of five country code entries on the Big Board. The non .com gTLDs were limited to the two I noted in the top 5.

The .coms swept everything else (13 entries in all). Sedo was even more dominant, piling up 17 charted sales as their biggest rival, Go Daddy/Afternic, remains stuck in non-reporting mode due to the required silent period surrounding Go Daddy's IPO.

Here is how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, July 27:

Country Codes

That $28,1240 sale of Liberty.ch that you saw on the all extension Top 20 above leads our latest weekly  Country Code Top 20 Sales Chart and also ranks among the 25 biggest ccTLD sales reported so far this year (the ccTLD YTD Top 100 is the second chart on the page linked to).

You also saw four more ccTLDs on the Big Board earlier, so  the highest sale from this category that you haven't seen yet is #6 TrainLine.de, a domain  that sold for $5,360 at Sedo. They went on to pile up 14 of the 21 chart entries (the extra spot resulted from a tie for the final position.

Nidoma.co took all seven of the remaining spots(six of those being Italian ccTLDs), including two that led the second ten - #11 Mangiaebevi.it at $4,288 and #12 Called.it at $4,173. Thanks to the Nidoma roster, Italy's .it tied Germany's ever popular .de with six entries each.

Non .com gTLDs (.net, .org, .biz, .info & others, including new gTLDs)

The non .com gTLDs were led by a pair of solid five-figure sales - Europe.org at $23,000 (which also ranks among the year's 10 biggest sales in this category) and TTS.net at $18,000 (good enough to reach the year's top 20 non .com gTLD sales). Sedo rang up both of those sales and swept 14 of this week's 16 chart entries (only 16 four-figure or higher non .com gTLD sales were reported this week).

Flippa filled the #3 slot with Shares.info at $6,350. Sedo then rounded out the first five with #4 MyFun.info at $5,000 and #5 Cats.club at $3,750

The .infos scored a rare win in the extension race with six chart entries, followed by the .orgs with four. .Club took three spots while the category's usual leader, .net, finished at the bottom with only two.
