What to do when your Internet goes down

When your Internet connection goes down, there’s only so much you can do.

Let’s face it: today’s interconnected world is so reliant on Internet connectivity, that very little can be achieved without it.

Some have asked that the Internet be considered a utility, much like power and water, that we depend on.

When you lose access to the Internet, some or all of the following things happen:

  • You can’t check your email.
  • You have no access to Facebook and other social networks.
  • You cannot create content online or update existing content.
  • You can’t use your VoIP phone.
  • You cannot register domain names.
  • You cannot play Words with Friends or other addictive games online.
  • You can’t stream movies on your TV, or listen to online radio streaming.
  • You can’t use software on your computer that requires an online connection for authentication or verification purposes.

If you have data access on your smart phone, you can circumvent some of these issues.

But truly, when your Internet connection goes down, this is an opportunity to do some of these things instead:

  • Read a book – the paper kind.
  • Go for a walk or to the gym – leave your phone and apps behind.
  • Visit an art gallery, go see a movie or treat yourself to dessert – even if it’s lunch time.
  • Paint, draw, or sketch, preferably on paper.
  • Spend time with friends, family and pets. They will be pleasantly surprised.

The bottom line is, that there are plenty of things to do without an Internet connection. You don’t need to have an Internet outage in order to do them. 😀
