Unhappy EuroDNS holding my domain hostage

I am unable to transfer my .it domain to Amazon because I am Canadian and I do not have European Union contact information.

Amazon was not very helpful either.

    Please help.

How did you manage to get a .it domain in the first place, seeing you don't appear to qualify?

The post title is misleading. EuroDNS is not holding your domain hostage - the .it registry requires that you meet residency or citizenship conditions. If you want to keep it then stay at EuroDNS who are acting as your residency agent.

Being a Canadian, have you met the requirements and registered a .IT domain in the first place? If you already have it, then are you sure it is indeed possible to fully transfer registration to Amazon?

As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong) Amazon is not a licensed registrar themselves, and in order to use domains with them, you simply change the DNS nameservers to reflect to theirs. But this is not an actual domain transfer, just a redirect, so when your domain name is typed, it knows which server to resolve to. Best check again with Amazon about their requirements, but it does sound like its nothing of EuroDNS's doing.

I suppose EuroDNS ought to have mentioned somewhere before payment that .it has certain requirements. Would be nice if they do, albeit they're not necessarily required, I think.

If anything, I guess EuroDNS lets people order while assuming the latter know what they're doing or what is required.

It is not, it's impossible for the average person like me to transfer .it domains out of EuroDNS. The only way I can continue to have the .it domain is really to stay with EuroDNS.

Really wish they'd let me know about this when I first signed up, the fact that you won't be able to transfer without a real EU address, which is hard enough for the average person to obtain.

My domain stays hostage forever at EuroDNS.

So, normally, you cannot register .IT domains but EuroDNS offers a service which allows you to own domains which you otherwise wouldn't be able to. Great, I'd say. Now it appears not everyone offers that service and you need to find a new provider which does.

If you truly cared, you could have looked up the registration terms for .IT domains before registering the domain.

Unless you simply meet the requirements to own an .it domain....

What do you mean by "average person"?

It's down to you to read up on the terms and conditions for the TLD you want to register, and I'm sure there will have been a link somewhere in the registration process that would have taken you straight to the T&Cs of the Italian registry. If you simply ticked "I accept the terms and conditions" without actually having read the terms and conditions then you only have yourself to blame.

My domain stays hostage forever at EuroDNS.
Just get yourself a European Union passport, or a friend with a European Union passport, or a European Union company, or an address in the European Union. Problem solved!

And next time do your homework before you register a domain name, especially if it's a ccTLD.

I agree with Techno, just because EuroDNS allowed you to use (i guess here) their address or an "agents" address in Europe, does not mean they are holding your domain hostage - simply find another registrar (obviously not Amazon) that offers the same "agents" address service.

GoDdaddy offers a .it agent service but they do not support domain transfers.
