    proper PTR record

Since my host did the ptr record for me. I thought i would go ahead and do the ptr record for my clients.

But what is the proper data entry fromat.

When i look at samples i see all kinds of formats, and when i look at results ie intodns i see a format result like this

    Code:
    xxx.xxx.x.xx.in-addr.arpa ->  name.domain.tld
Forgive me if i am wrong but here is what i did due to what i read.

I looked at my clients MX record is

    Code:
    domain.com. 14400 IN MX 0 domain.com.
so what i did was this input record,
i had this at first but then removed it xxx.xxx.x.xx.in-addr.arpa.

    Code:
     domain.com 1800 IN PTR domain.com.
is that the right way to do that, or should have stuck with the arpa input? im not sure if on the far right if i should put mail.domain.com or hostname.domain.com

    Code:
    xxx.xxx.x.xx.in-addr.arpa. 1800 IN PTR server.domain.com.
That's the correct syntax. DME has a good article about rDNS zones: http://help.dnsmadeeasy.com/spry_menu/ptr-record/

Woops yes, there has to be a dot after that too. It is your IP address in reverse order followed by ".in-addr.arpa.".

    strange it says

ignoring out-of-zone data (xx.x.xxx.xxx.in-addr.arpa) zone xxxxxx***********
and i have the ip backwards back to front octets 4.3.2.1

and the dot is after arpa

    i did use mail.domain.com i wonder if i need to use hostname.name.com or ns1.domain.com

how would you do this in a template, i dont want to use the actual ip incase it changes then i have to remember to change the template too.

    Code:
    %ipv4%.in-addr.arpa IN PTR mail.%domain%.
i think that might work, but how would you get the ip backwards for the PTR?

Thanks i already been there the other day when making this post. Thanks for the reply.

But to update this i have gone in and removed the PTR anyway, sorry i forgot to update this..

The reason is that i assumed there was a hierarchy to this meaning that my main host does my PTR and then i do the PTR for my clients.

This does not appear to be the case, it would seem that all PTR at any level have to come from the the main data center. Which would explain why after a few days my PTR still had not resolved for my clients, so i removed the PTR record for them all since it was obviously igoring it.

Thanks but at least now i know...

    Why?

PTR records are generally managed by the "owner" of the IP(s) needing PTR records. The only way you would get them to show up is to ask your host/datacenter (whoever manages the IP range) to insert them into their records for you.

(Didn't we have this conversation before? When I was F-DNS.)

yes sir however that was a different situation. At that time i was trying to set the PTR for my host.

This time i was trying to set the PTR for my clients.

I did not know it was all the same autority that had to do this. I thought i could do my clients but i just could not do myself.

Hey, don't do that. Generally people only say that to me when they want extra cheesecake. If it's for another reason, I get nervous.

Just ask youself one question. "Do I "own" that IP?". If you don't, you can't do nuffink. You have to ask your uplink.

After-all, who's going to ask your mydomain.com, who's not listed as owning that IP range, when they can ask your-super-dooper-host.com, who does?
