Both are actually well, but when I really have to choose between those 2, i'd say .host

I would say the preferred is still going to be .com/.net for a long, long time.

getting a .host and a .hosting wouldn't be a bad idea just for branding purposes...but I'd stick with .com/.net for the main domain.

I think the change is going to come sooner once all the new extensions are available. After all, isn't the whole idea of these new extns to make searching easier? Take for example slashdot.org what kind of website is it? there's no clue in the name, but in a couple years if your looking for say a plumber all the search results will show domain names ending in .plumber first. And of course a webhosting company? .host or maybe .hosting ?

To me .host is most preferable between of them. But i think .com or .net is best for us.
Most of the company has to re-brand them if they choose .host or .hosting extension. Like hostgator.host sounds funny.

Domain like web.host or web.hosting could be great either way -- so it's hard to say which would be better!

if I have money, I will buy both .host and .hosting.
Botg domains are good for hosting business brand, and $30/year is not expensive.

In my opinion, these domain extensions are not quite familiar to people yet and therefore it is more recommended to register a .com domain name. However, these extension will be important in few years, and it is a great opportunity for all web hosting companies to register domain name with the .host & .hosting domain name extensions.

*Note: normally people prefer short domain names, and therefore .host will be used more.

.com is best for main domain. And for branding you can go for .host and that wouldn't be a bad idea.
    Good luck.

I would agree with everyone above and say that .com and .net are still going to be the best choices for a company domain.

.com and .net are definatly on the top of the list as every one mentioned above. But if you want selection between .host and .hosting then .host is more preffered by me.

    .host looks good
It shouldn't be much trouble people migrating from .host to .hosting as these extensions will be used by hosting providers and websites are browsed by webmasters. All in all.host is cool
    cheers

Neither .host nor .hosting -> (something).com is still what most consumers are comfortable with overall.

.host. The shorter gTLDs have been getting a lot of good response lately. Also, sounds better to me.

Since these domains are now live, maybe someone wants to update the topic again. Well I will

I would say that none of the new generic names are better to start or brand a hosting company. The reason is that .com is still the preferred domain name and big brands and companies do not plan to change this either. This is not going to change in the near future, not even in years from today, unless some very big companies starts to advertise and popularize a domain that is not ending in .com, which so far didn't happen since the Internet exists.

Look all the big services like Facebook, Twitter, from Amazon to Google, not even .net or .org are hosting any type of big web company, so what makes someone think a generic domain will do better...at least so far new domains names never took off.

Just look your phone's keyboard, you see a .com button on them, in some if you hold it, they will allow another .net or .gov option but do you think you will expect to see .host or .hosting or any other new TLD there in any near future?

The answer is no. The new TLD's are mostly a money grab scheme in order for companies to protect their brands. Ask any system administrator and they will tell you that 100% of all emails they receive from new domains are spam. So good luck trying to send a business email to someone using something like .host, or .hosting or any new domain. Most spam filters have blocked them by now. And as for websites? It's the same story. Most of them are hosting malware today. Not real websites.

So who is registering the new domain names? Well mostly companies that need to protect a brand. But even so, to be honest, its not the majority either because they don't need to register every domain in the universe to protect their brand. If you plan to register something like Rackspace.hosting or similar, and plan to ride on their brand, you will get a cease and desist letter very fast since they hold the trademark. They don't even need to register the domain name, you can register a popular brand if it's a dog website or something not related directly, but if its related to hosting and another company is selling under that brand, you will get into trouble and possible lose the domain name.

Its better to have a longer .com domain name that people know than some short cool name that ends in .host, and if its too cool, you probably violating someones trademark already.

I'm not saying they are all bad. But most people don't type domains into their browsers anymore, that is my point.

And printing them on a business card or advertising will even confuse your prospects, because I know that example.com is a website I need to type in Google or my browsers address bar but most people will not understand what they have to do with example.host, not to mention some software like email clients will not recognize them as links either and so they will not be clickable. The only point someone could make is for SEO purposes, but as far as I know, Google does not position them better and has no plans to do so either. I don't even think they take domains extensions into account today, unless its country generic domain names.

Now, assuming you really want one of those new domain names, the logic tells you immediately that .host is better because its shorter right?

Well not really. Dot host can mean anything related to configuration or the word host. It does not exactly mean a hosting service or hosting company. It can be something you like a host event, host is just extremely generic as opposed to hosting. If you think Google will position them better, then .hosting will probably is a better target than .host as I cannot see many people typing budget host vs budget hosting or cloud host vs cloud hosting or web site host vs web site hosting. Hosting just sounds better related to hosting services and that is what people will search mostly as opposed to host.

Now, .cloud is probably better than both of them, as non technical people will probably search cloud first today than hosting. So I would say cloud is first, hosting is second and host is last.

If you also target non English users, that is even more true, as host means nothing in other languages but hosting is used in almost all languages to describe hosting services.

I would suggest you to go for .com or .net TLD.

Go with a .com, users will recognize it and find you sooner; then, if you really want, you can get a .host and have it redirect it the .com - but to me it's not really worth it.
