1and1 99 cent Domain Name Transfer Offer

I made the mistake of not researching into the background of 1and1's crappy reputation which seems to exist in every nook and cranny of the internet, and transferred an about-to-expire domain name out of GoDaddy. I then realized that the transfer wasn't going to happen within hours and usually takes 3 days or more, and can take up to a week to complete. We are now completely down, and I called 1&1's offshore customer service asking if they could expedite the transfer, but I was already 99% sure that the call was going to achieve nothing and I was right.

There have been a lot of people that have posted nonsense and libel about 1and1 because they didn't read the legal terms that were presented to them as part of their order, which obviously outlines how 1and1 handles the contract; being your domain(s), hosting, etc. Many of the posts I've read have revolved around people not reading the fine print, feeling that they're owed something they disagree with in terms of what's in the fine print (after finding out how the company operates) that they failed to read yet accepted, and some have essentially taken the leap dictating that 1and1 are a bunch of scammers. That's hard to believe to me considering that 1and1 has 13.64 million customers, and scammers never last very long. A bad company with bad policies is one thing; scammers using a front masquerading as a legitimate company is completely different.

1and1 is obviously a terrible company with bad customer service and unfriendly legal terms, but I'm taking full responsibility for not doing more research and I'm getting what I paid for. I would like to transfer my domain somewhere else after the 60 days is up, so if anybody has tips to make this go smoothly, please let me know. I also have read that disabling auto-renew can't be done in the control panel even though the option is there, or something along those lines, and there are more steps to truly disabling it. Some have written about steps detailing a finicky and ridiculous procedure one must take before transferring a domain name out. I'm really not so sure that it's as complicated as some posts make it out to be (actually I have serious doubts), but I just want to make sure we don't lose the domain name. Also, I'll update this thread when the transfer goes through.

Called customer service again wondering if I may get somebody in the USA, but nope! I was told in regards to the up to 5 day transfer time that "that's how our system works". You'd think they they would improve their system after a myriad of complaints dating back to 2007.

The rep also told me that it takes an additional 2 days after the 5 days for the DNS transfer to happen. And that's stupid, because I can just edit the DNS settings myself; it's one IP address. Seriously, to anybody who reads this: please do not do business with 1and1 unless you have a domain and/or site that you don't really care about.

According to them, the 5 days is all because of ICANN's rules. Yeah. Sure.

    Thank you for contacting us.

Our apologies for any confusion or inconvenience caused here. It will take 5 calendar days for the transfer to complete after initiation (August 28, 2014) and possibly another 24-48 hours for the DNS information to propagate if the DNS was not changed before the transfer. For more information on the transfer process, please visit :

In which it states; Consistent with ICANN's obligation to promote and encourage robust competition in the domain name space, the Inter-Registrar Transfer Policy aims to provide a straightforward procedure for domain name holders to transfer their names from one ICANN-accredited registrar to another should they wish to do so. The policy also provides standardized requirements for registrar handling of such transfer requests from domain name holders.

Unfortunately, this is not a process we have the ability to change. These are ICANN's rules and we have to abide these in order to complete a domain transfer. Again, our apologies. Thank you for understanding.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Up to 5 days is typical at all registrars. Much depends on how quickly the losing registrar releases the domain. The hold up could be at GoDaddy's end.

The thing is, that it's already out of GoDaddy's system and the transfer on their end was completed within a matter of hours. Our domain is now showing up as 1and1 being the registrar upon a WHOIS query, yet I have this feeling that 1and1 will sit on it because their system is antiquated.

I have never transferred from GoDaddy to 1and1, but I have done 1and1 to GoDaddy, and it only took a few hours.
