How to set up a website with different hosting and doman providers
Hi,
I'm new at all this so forgive my ignorance!
I am trying to set up a website for a friend who already has a domain name registered with telstra. I've set up hosting with bluehost and want to start a wordpress site for them. I spoke to Bluehost who said i need to change my name servers, but Telstra have said this will cause around 3 days down time with the email addresses that are linked to the domain. Is there anyway around this and what settings do I need to change with Telstra to point it to my hosting with bluehost? I dont want to stuff up their emails!!!
I've attached what the domain set up looks like if that helps! with the domain name blacked out.
THanks,

It usually does not take 72 hours, but up to 24h.
Also, my suggestion would be - change only NS2 first. When they are initiated after a few days, change NS1. You will get no downtime this way.☢ CherryServers.com - since 2001

Actually, usually DNS propagation takes 2-12 hours, but in some cases for some domain zones this process can take 24-72 hours( but this is a rare case I should say).

In regards to your question, as others have stated there is really no way around the down time. When you change the nameservers of the domain and point it to the nameservers that were provided to you from you hosting company, you will have what's called down time and it's because of dns propagation. Dns propagation usually takes about 2 to 8 hours but I personally have seen situations where it can take up to around 72 hours. The reason it can take so long is that each ISP has an automated process that updates and caches dns records every few days. Until their cache is reset, it will not display your launched website or have your emails work correctly.
There are many places you can go to Make an Email Address that is reliable and secure.

U need to specify the domain provider DNS addresses to which you want to redirect the domain. If you do not know these DNS and are nowhere given in your customer or client panel, you should email your hosting company support to get this info about DNS's.

Just update name servers provided by bluehost to your domain panel. in next 24 hours your domain will be at your host and will reflect all changes you are making in your hosting or code.

Just create and "A" Record on your DNS management interface with your current domain name provider and point to Bluehost. You don't have to change the name servers at all.

If you are using the DNS from your registrar, then of course, this will be quite enough to add A entry for your domain to point to the server ip address.

There are indeed two ways of doing this - but whether or not both are actually available to you depends on the type of service offered by the companies concerned (i.e., whether you have to take the complete package - name servers, web hosting, mail hosting - or whether you can pick and choose):
- You can move to your new provider lock, stock and barrel. This requires changing the name servers, and is likely to mean some downtime (there are ways of minimising this, but I won't go into detail here as it's very technical)
- You can continue to use your current provider for DNS hosting (and mail hosting, if required) and just use your new provider for web hosting. This will require you to change the A record with your existing DNS host.
Either will work!

My personal suggestion is to take this downtime (which is usually 12 hours but yes can take upto 72 hours). Its always better to use hosting provider's name servers because hosting providers sometimes change IP addresses or may be migrate you off to another server so if the DNS is under their control then they can do this on your behalf
