World Net Daily: Your Alexa rankings will plummet, if you’re a Conservative!

An article over at the Conservative – aka, right wing – news web site, World Net Daily, proclaims that there is an ongoing conspiracy against Conservative web sites, staged by Amazon-owned Alexa.com.

According to the article, the current mass drop in Alexa rankings witnessed worldwide, does not affect Liberal web sites such as NPR.org, The Daily Kos and Democracy Now.

If that were true, DomainGang would be shooting through the roof, as we are very Liberal and damn proud of it! We are losing Alexa rankings just as everyone else does, but it’s not a true reflection of traffic metrics.

The fact is, that Alexa has never been an accurate source of metrics, particularly since the proliferation of mobile access.

On top of that, in a blog post on October 1st, Alexa announces an upcoming change in the metrics, affecting how rankings are measured:

“We’re excited to announce that starting in October, we’ll be increasing the size of our data panel. That’s the sample of Internet traffic we use to calculate non-Certified metrics. Because a bigger data sample means we can make better estimates, you may see your Alexa rank and site metrics change over the next month as a result, especially if your site is ranked above 100,000.”

Right wingers need to drop their conspiracy tin foil hats right now; every web site is affected, not just those of a Conservative affiliation. The only reliable traffic analysis comes from Google Analytics, and we are proud to have been keeping records since the first week of our launch. 😀

Here are some recent dips in Alexa rankings, for popular domainer blogs:
