Domain Sales Have Rebounded Strongly This Year But Past Week was Weak

I spent some time Monday (Oct. 20) compiling 2014 domain sales data for a report I will give at next week's T.R.A.F.F.I.C. conference in Miami Beach, Florida (I will also be publishing an analysis of the data in an upcoming series of newsletters that will break the 2014 data down quarter by quarter for the first nine months of the year). The top line results showed that total domain sales $ volume, across all extensions, for the first three quarters of 2014 was up almost 20% from the same period last year. Even so, there are lulls in every market and we saw one in the domain aftermarket this past week with no reported sales above the $40,000 mark.

$40,000 was the exact number that DomainMarket.com booked for #1 TotalWireless.com. Seller Michael Mann was a happy camper since he had acquired the domain for just $4,450 in 2008. TotalWireless.com was one of just nine five-figure sales reported this week (with none at six figures for the second week in a row).

By Ron Jackson

The runner-up spot on our latest weekly all-extension Top 20 Sales Chart went to the week's highest non .com gTLD sale, Designs.net, at $16,800 via Sedo.com. With Go Daddy/Afternic still not reporting sales due to the quiet period surrounding Go Daddy's IPO, no one was able to stop Sedo from sweeping the remainder of the board, including the rest of the first five with #3 0199.com at $15,240, #4 LocalGenius.com at $14,000 and two names that tied for #5 -  Sharing24.com and WorkspaceSuite.com at $12,500 each.

The .coms piled up 15 of the 21 chart entries (the extra spot resulted from a three-way tie for the final position). The non .com gTLDs filled four holes, all with .nets, including one that joined Designs.net in the top ten - #10 Podiatrist.net at $9,900.

The ccTLDs were limited to two spots - both three-letter domains that were among the trio of names tied at #19. NRD.de and SLV.fr went for $6,350 apiece

Keep in mind that these are the highest value cash only sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

Country Codes

It is very rare to have a week with no five-figure sales reported in the ccTLD category bu that was the case this week. A pair of $6,350 sales at Sedo for NRD.de and SLV.fr shared the top spot on our latest weekly Country Code Top 20 Sales Chart. Sedo took the #3 spot as well with #3 Oasis.de at $5,080 while DomainLore.co.uk sold #4 Hackney.co.uk at $4,991.

NetFleet.com.au rounded out the first five with #5 Nick.com.au at $4,883. They put another Australian domain on the top half of the leader board, selling #10 BL.com.au for $3,323.

Sedo swept 16 of the 20 chart entries with a roster that included 11 German .de sales including #6 TM-Net.de at $4,763. With so many representatives on the chart .de obviously won the extension race. The only other TLDs with multiple chart entries were Great Britain's .co.uk with three and Australia's .com.au with two.

The non .com gTLDs were led by the four domains you saw charted on the all extension leader board at the top of this report, a group led by Sedo's $16,800 sale of Designs.net. That is Billiger.net at $6,349, also via Sedo who accounted for all of this week's reported sales.

Still this category did not escape the overall siesta the market appeared to take this past week. All told only 14 sales four-figure non .com gTLD sales were reported with nine of those being .nets. The .orgs took three spots, including #6 PKW.org at $5,715, with a couple of new gTLDs filling the remaining openings - #9 Mindful.solutions at $2,400 and # 13 Macaron.berlin at $1,016
