Real briefly, you can either run a mail server on your DO hosting (not recommended unless you know what you are doing), get a (probably paid) Google Apps account so you can use the Gmail platform for email to/from your domain, or just forward all mail to your domain from Godaddy to a plain old gmail account, then set up account aliases there for the mailname@yourdomain.com and tell Gmail to use that as your from and reply-to.
Good luck,
Ed

Actually, Google recently disabled that feature. You can currently only use your own SMTP server to send e-mail from different addresses.
I don't think the idea is that bad. However, you could mix both and pipe incoming e-mail to Gmail and outgoing e-mail through an SMTP service installed on your DO VPS.

I am curious as to why you are using digital ocean when it sounds like you are just starting out. Depending on your needs you might be better off to get a shared cpanel account (instead of digital ocean) as this way you can easily create and manage email accounts, email forwarders, and even check email on your phone, online, or other.
just remember that digital ocean is self managed, un-hardened servers with no control panel, so you might find better support and security going with a shared cpanel host.
I believe that to use gmail, this is a paid feature? Hotmail has this free if you have office 365 online? again, I dont use either of these so I cannot provide step by step instructions on how to set this up..

MadMatt is right. Go with shared hosting. Your new host will guide you on how to get email working.
Alternatively if you want to use godaddy's email forwarding ask their customer support for help. That's what they are there for.

That's the Username and password of your godaddy mail. You can contact godaddy support for the details like Pop server and port. I set up one before but with a different host and so I cannot help you on how to do it on godaddy.

First of all you need to a mail server and configure your domain to use it, otherwise you will not receive any email and you can not forward them to your gmail account
you can setup a mail server on your VPS OR use a shared hosting OR email hosting OR transfer your domain to another registrar some of them offer free DNS service, you can use it to create email forward
