GoDaddy SMS breaks new record in two-factor authentication

GoDaddy, the biggest domain registrar in the world, takes domain security very seriously.

After quickly scrambling to patch a security flaw last week, GoDaddy has now enabled Ultra Fast Two Factor Authentication (UFTFA) for all US-based customers.

The introduction of UFTFA provides all accounts with nearly instant dispatch and delivery of SMS/text messages upon account logging.

“We are speeding up the process by at least 100 times, this is as instant as it gets to getting your two-factor authentication code in order to log in,” said GoDaddy regional VP, Drew Lawnger.

“Some domain investors complained it would take anything between 30 seconds to 3 minutes, depending on network congestion to receive their codes; in today’s interconnected world, this is simply too long of a wait time, and we fixed that,” added Lawnger.

Indeed, SMS messages sent upon attempting to access one’s GoDaddy account now arrive within 0.85 to 1.25 seconds after submitting the form.

GoDaddy is using 125 cluster cloud servers stationed around the US to provision all SMS messages using Google Fiber and multiple redundant points of delivery, something that was achieved by exclusive carrier contracts with T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint and AT&T.

Hopefully, this service improvement will keep GoDaddy customers happy for a few weeks at least.
