Elserver registers domain under its CEO Name
Hello all! Newbie from Argentina here, helping a friend with her startup company. SMB, three users for now. They bought a domain from Elserver.com, which plays as both domain registrar and web hosting company. They have not hired web hosting yet, stil designing the website, which prompted me to research where to hire this service. I read that there is a perception that it's best not to have your web hosting with the same company you registered your domain at. The article said that while it is not necessarily true, what happened is many companies registered the domain under their name instead of the customer's name, and if he or she chose to transfer the domain elsewhere, it became tricky. I looked up the domain on who is, and the registry entry lists Enom, registrar Elserver.com, and under it the registrant name is the CEO of Elserver.com, not my friend who registered with them.
Should I be concerned about this being an issue in the future? Would you recommend I move the domain to a company that will allow me to register under my friend's name?
Also, in your experience, does keeping registrar and web hosting company separate create any inconvenience?
Thanks guys!
Johann

I believe you should always be in control of your domain, your brand, as much as you can. You will have to trust an Enom, GoDaddy, or now Google I guess. But at least you kind of know who they are.
If something happens to a host or you need to leave for any reason, better to not have to count on that host to have your domain name servers updated.

M71, thanks for your response! I am still unclear as if it is common practice that registrars register the domain under their name (e.g. name of a reseller company), or I should ensure that the company which registers the domain, puts my friend's name?

You should ensure that your friend information match the Administrative Contact of the domain.

Thank you Cenourinha! The Admin Name is the CEO of Elserver. This should suffice to advise her to transfer the domain to a company that will register under her name, correct? I have found that Wavenet will do this. I also need web hosting and am thinking of hiring Wavenet for this. For now I could keep the domain registered with Elserver (it was registered last December) and do the hosting with Wavenet. Then during the course of the year transfer the domain to Wavenet.

You don't need to transfer, you just need to ask them to update the Administrative Contact Information with the correct contact details.
