This is a 100% free Chrome extension that checks hundreds of GoDaddy coupon codes and creates a list of all the ones that work, and the prices they get you.

It's in the beta phase and is still in Developer Mode. I put it through some tests today and it appears to be running pretty smoothly now. Still, I wouldn't be surprised to see some bugs turn up.

It literally takes less than two minutes to download and install. I created a video that walks you through the process, including the download.

Once installed you just "prime" it, and let it run. When it's done it prints a list of valid codes and the prices they will get you.

Here's the video.

So you guys don't think there could be any possible repercussions from GoDaddy as the result of my making this?

I ran the full code list last night and came up with a few good ones. I'm hoping someone can come up with a more complete list than the one I have.

Nice job Greg.

I was thinking about an improvement : as it is unlikely that a code that has stopped working will ever work in the future, the extension could flag bad codes and never check them again.

Hi, there wont be any repercussions from Godaddy. I have used a similar chrome extension for a while, but they did stopped upgrading the codes, so I removed it.

So keep up the good work. :)

Looks worthy of a try. Any chance we'll see a Firefox extension?

@greggb Love your attitude of "just build it". Kudos to you!

Thanks for all the replies and kind words! I'm planning on making some improvements to this tomorrow or the next day. Then I'm probably going to package it up so it will be easy to install.

No reports of bugs so far? And I think I figured out why you need to "prime" it.

As for the suggestion of flagging invalid codes, what I'll do is just replace the current list of codes with the ones that program prints out, which will automatically exclude invalid ones.

Ideally this would be something I'd update once a week or so. I'm hoping someone else would be willing to round up codes and put them all in a single reply in the Coupon Codes thread. Then I could just copy and paste them into the extension and repackage it.

As for the question about making an extension for firefox...I haven't looked into it closely, but I'm not sure if firefox offers the kind of development tools that Chrome does. Anyway, it will probably be enough work maintaining one extension, let alone two. So I'll probably only offer this as a chrome extension.

Disclaimer : I'm a developer too.

I think the extension should keep its own local database of bad codes, because a code can fail for one of these reasons :
1) Code expired
2) Code has already been used by user
3) Code not good for user's country

So IMO it's not that much a matter of old/new codes, but mostly of used/unused codes (by the very user)

Regarding updates, I would have it read the full list of codes from a hardcoded webpage, which would be updated once a week (say). Then the bad codes (compare with local db) would not be checked at all.

greggb,

First off I wanted to say thank you for providing this extension. I am going to put it through a few paces and report any bugs/issues etc. I have just a few questions/suggestions from the start as I have not used it as of yet. Is there anyway to add codes to this manually? I ask this because I source codes from all over the net and would like an import function to increase the codes. Also, I'm sending you a PM about a possible business venture as well.

Thanks again

Sometimes codes that did not work before start working, sometimes suddenly codes you used before can be used again, sometimes a code is good for several uses, some codes only work in certain currencies or countries, often there is an additional valid variant of a code...most codes only work with credit cards...

Does your Checker also find the "link" codes? The ones that work when you follow a link OR when you remove the name from the cart and add it anew after the code is entered.

As I'm working on projects to help me with several misc things, I installed Chrome and this. Now I'm kicking myself--hard--for not getting it sooner. This is a heavenly thing. Like, if God truly had a face, this is what he'd look like. GREAT thing to have, and I thank you infinitely for it. Keep up the good work!

Hi all,

@greggb : your extension already saved me about $6 yesterday :)

More than the money itself, it's the beauty of the automation I liked. I had all these codes lying around but was tired of trying them manually each time I had a new registration to make. I used a "tab opener" which I fed "cart urls" with each coupon hardcoded in, but that still required lot of manual work. YOU SAVED THE DAY !

Here is what I can give back: an updated (deduplicated) list of coupons that contains your original list of 350 plus 171 I gathered on this forum and elsewhere.

It is already formated right, so for those of you who can't wait the update, just open the "background.js" file in the GD Coupon Checker file and copy paste the update list in lieu of the old one you will fine at the bottom of the file.

I won't upload the updated "background.js" file myself since that is not my code and I don't feel entitled to do so...

===
Here is how I plan to use the extension and maintain the coupon list
===

As far as I understand, there are several situation possible with coupons.

  • The same coupon can be used more than once (with a wait period of ?? days).
  • Some codes are country specific (I operate in France and sometimes a coupon that seems to work for everybody else does not work, though it's the first time I try it)
  • Some codes are returned as "Invalid" by GoDaddy, so I guess these won't ever work for the person using them (maybe because of geo ?)
  • Some codes seem to work up to payment time, where a "invalid card" red flag appears and stops the checkout.
Anyway : I intend to run the extension one or two times a month, just to check if the status of a given code has changed from "not-working" to "working".

===
Suggestions of modifications
===

1) I think the codes list should be in a separate txt file.

That would allow us to
  • Update codes without ever touching the script.
  • Replace the list with another list easily (If I have a new list of 30 codes to try, I just backup the old 500+ list and use the new list instead. I can always merge those 30 new into the old list to get my updated list for the monthly validity check)

2) Format of output would be easier to use (for me at least) if in csv format

I would use "coupon name, price, status" and leave the invalid ones in the list (issued with a "n/a" price).

With time that would help to build some prioritization in the coupons to test manually after the automated part.

Sorry for the long rap, but I feel very enthusiastic :)
Thanks again Greggb.
