Hello everyone,

I have someone who seems interested in one of my domains. He owns the singular.com and plural.com and I own the singular.org

He's asked how much I want, to which I replied to make an offer. He comes back asking how much I paid for it. What would you reply? help please

Tell him - it's immaterial what you paid for it. If he's interested in the domain, to make a fair market offer, and that you'll consider it and get back to him.

'Never' tell someone what you paid for a domain, or anything you're selling. They'll then try to justify their offers by the amount of profit you would be making.

hawkeye has it spot on with regards to not disclosing the purchase price. You could alternatively say something like "I'm not in a position to disclose that information..."

However when someone directly asks how much you have one of two options;

1: Give them a ballpark figure "I'm looking for around low $xxx"
or
2: Give them a flat, realistic price, but leave room for them to negotiate you down without being stupid with your price. Say you want $150, asking $200-250 wouldn't look out of place when you get the final price.

Don't do the whole, back-and-forth make an offer mating call thing, that'll just piss people off. If they ask for a price don't waste their time.

I should warn you not to get your hopes up though, a lot of 'how much' type replies won't lead to anything as they'll often vanish without replying back to you. Happened to me quite frequently as of late. Good luck!

Exactly what you said Electric-Shadow, my first "How much" vanished. I don't mind, it was my first one,that just means I managed to reg a domain someone else found valuable!

Yeah, it's a good indicator at least. One thing you can try in this circumstance is to wait a couple of days to a week and E-Mail them back asking if they've thought anymore about your offer. It's quite possible they forgot, your e-mail got buried by spam, had to talk to partners, or they were merely curious.

There's any number of reasons why you won't get a reply after the initial 'how much' but subtle reminder can sometimes help get the ball rolling again.
