What's a good way to find out how to get in touch with their marketing director?

It depends on how it's incorporated.

Smaller businesses have the "C-execs" as members; all public information, with their title and possible contact information.

It's a little bit more difficult to find the gatekeeper for larger companies though.

Not always. PM the company name and I'll see if I can find them.

Utilizing large professional communities that cater to executives / resumes can be very handy in locating a decision maker via internal search queries for a company. (E.g. www.Linkedin.com ) - You can either try to add them as a connection there, or you can take some of the information on their resume to launch another search query for a public contact number/email that could have potentially been indexed in a search engine. Alternately, you can just call the company and ask for them directly now that you know who to ask for. Be sure to do lots of research on the company first. ;)

No, you would look in the specific state that the company is formed, which is easily attainable with a Google search.

As an example, let's take Nevada and their Business Entity Search. Searching for "insurance", I see a lot of Active companies (may still be in business, needs further research as you renew yearly [varies by state I believe]).

Clicking on the business name, I am able to see a lot of valuable information including the location, expiration date (an indicator whether they're still in business) and Officers with their titles.

Take that information to LinkedIn or another professional network if you cannot obtain their email or phone number and send a friendly proposition.

This is the cheapest, but "hardest" way that I have found narrowing down an end user.
