GoDaddy - Get my account back?

NameSilo
Watch
I bought several thousand of dollars worth of domains through my real identity Godaddy account. Because of past experiences, I am somewhat paranoid about my privacy. I was not satisfied with the Godaddy whois privacy protection service.

A Godaddy account was created using an alias and fake whois info. However, the email used for this Godaddy account was through a free, online, email provider and was real. Let’s called this MGAA (my godaddy alias account)

The domains from my real Godaddy account were transferred MGAA.

A prepaid debit card was purchased and registered online with the same fake info as MGAA. This prepaid debit card was used to purchase 2 domains in the Godaddy account of MGAA

All was well until I checked the email of MGAA and saw that all the charges were reversed on the prepaid debit card.

There was an email saying with the following:

During the login process, our secure site will prompt you to upload a viewable, scanned copy of the payment method account holder's government-issued photo identification, such as a driver's license or passport. In the comments box, we ask that you also provide a brief explanation of how you intend to use the product(s) purchased. If we do not receive the requested documentation within the next 48 hours, your order(s) may be cancelled for your protection.

Unfortunately, the email was received after 48 hour deadline.

The final email I received from Godaddy to MGAA reads.

Thank you for being our valued customer. Your account has been reviewed by our verification office as a precautionary measure to defend you from possible misuse of either your payment method or products in your account. As a result of this review, your recent order(s) in shopper account ######## have been cancelled. Please note that refunds issued to the original payment method are normally processed by your payment provider and/or issuing bank within five to 10 business days.

I interpreted it to mean that only the charges would be reversed on the prepaid debit card attached to MGAA.

But now I cannot login into MGAA’s and I still have many valuable domains trapped in there.

Nor have receive any email from Godaddy telling me that my account is locked. I simply cannot log in.

I realized I almost certainly violated Icann’s and Godaddy TOS and accept responsibility.

What can I do to get my account back?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
It is Godaddy's regular process of validating Creditcard/Debitcard holder's identity proof.

You have to submit scanned copy of CreditcardHolder/DebitcardHolder's ID proof issued by government.

They will again activate your account once these process completed.

P.S.
Using fake identity is not advice able in Godaddy and other registrars too.

How do I send scanned ID of a fake alias? Photoshop something and send it? Also does it matter if it is past the 48hour deadline they originally gave me?

EDIT added the following
Also I want to emphasize Godaddy never sent me a email saying that MY ACCOUNT was locked. Only that they were reversing the charges on the prepaid debit card. When ever I try to login, Godaddy acts as if my account never existed.

If your 18 and still in school try a couple times with a social card and school ID.
They will usually accept that as well

Activities such as this are among the exact reasons GD and other companies have identity verification in place. Your actions have forced them to the verification process, and now they need to ensure you aren't some hacker swiping peoples identity or account info and stealing their names, which does happen.

Your best bet now, if you haven't already done so, would be to simply call [not email] GoDaddy direct to actually speak to a Customer Service Rep, and explain your case. Once they verify who YOU are (not your alias imaginary friend) they will be able to see you pushed your names from your original account to your fake account. From that point let them advise how to best handle a more rigid identity protection to ease your paranoia. Good luck.

Just to chime in a real experience I have. I have my own GD account and after I ran out of coupon codes, I get my wife to register another account and used her own credit card ( these are real info not fake ). Bought a few names with coupon codes on my wife's account without problems but later my wife's account got locked and she got a verification request and I upload all my wife's info and the account was unlocked in 5 minutes.

A few days later, was informed again that my purchase will be reversed and was requested to verify again. I sent the same info again but this time, there was no reprieve and the account was terminated. Reason given was that I cannot make multiple accounts to take advantage of the coupon codes.

2 things came to mind how they managed to identify it's the same person with 2 accounts.

Address was the same and IP is the same... ( though I am unsure if they traced IP ).

Were you transferring your wife's domains to your account? Do they simply have a policy of no repeat coupons in a household? Just wondering why they were confident to assume that your wife wasn't also legitimately buying domains.

No we operated differently... hers stays in her account and mine stayed in my account. Based on their email, I guess only 1 household is entitled to 1 account IF you are using their codes. If we are buying at the full price, then, I guess it is ok... But there were no repreive... they deleted the account straight away.

Most probably they detected the same IP. Of course, as there are bigger apartment buildings, the same address alone should not be a reason enough for termination (ID checks yes, termination - unlikely). But the fact that you are sharing the same IP detects exactly what you were doing - creating multiple accounts for the sake of taking advantage of more coupons. Regardless if you later transferred the domains to one account or not, this is reason enough for them to close the service.

As for the OP, I'd follow @RevolutionaryDomains advice and directly contact GD, explaining the same story in details and hopefully they will be able to cooperate if its not too late.

This can't be how it works... Same IP shouldn't be the only reason for termination...

What happens when two different person, with same IP, different devices, different CCs and different GD accounts from the same office, on the same day (or any other day) use the same coupon for different domains?

This is legitimate business scenario and it can happen in real life, my case too.
I share day office space with developers and design agency and when they need a domain they are all buying with Godaddy coupon codes. We never had any problems thus far.

It would be pretty awkward to run a 'used coupons from the same IP' check list for this purpose...or get 'account terminated' from godaddy

I have two GoDaddy accounts. I receive domains I buy in the aftermarket to one account and push them to my main account. I do this because of the security issues with giving out my account details for the push. I have the same made-up whois info for both but my account emails are different. I don't use coupons since I probably only register at most 6 domains a year. I have no payment setup for the receiving account, but I was still able to make a renewal using my credit card. I have paypal and credit cards registered for payments on my main account. I told my Account Manager what I was doing and he said it was all ok just so long as I could be contacted via my whois info, by phone, email, or mail. So I purchased (already had) a mailbox for $100/yr, and got a phone from one of the phone re-routing companies, pay as you go, $10/start. I needed the mailbox to be in US, but I actually live in Asia. I actually got a call from my account manager to that phone, and the phone company sent me the voice mail, but at the time my computer wasn't wired for sound. I could only respond to my account manager 3 weeks later when my computer got sound (some earphones). I sent him an email, about the problem which had been solved already. Just to make him aware my phone was good (although it wasn't a test on his part). I have been operating this way for years. If they were to lock one of my accounts and ask for proof of identity, I'd send them my real data. I'd explain what I'd been doing and why (my concerns about their security). I'm sure they would re-open my account. But I fly under their radar, with operational phone, mail, email services, and I always reply to any email request to confirm my identity which they send out occasionally. But I have never, ever replied to the annual confirmations that ICANN calls for.

This is my story of how I operate with GoDaddy. I don't use coupons. But it anyhow, it might be useful for somebody reading this thread.

After I setup my 2 account system, I no longer ever got my main account blocked for too many attempts to login after purchasing domains on NamePros. So not everyone here on NamePros are angels. Buyer beware!

Another story of someone gaming the system and getting caught.

This can't be how it works... Same IP shouldn't be the only reason for termination...

No doubt about it, I do agree here. However, as OP states its not a case of a direct termination here, they were required to verify their account and were later closed due to no action. It is unfortunate that the message was not seen in time but the procedure does sound kinda standard. The system was triggered due to some factors (I don't believe same IP was the sole one, but a major one no doubt), the client was required to provide further documentation, they were not provided and the account was closed.

Now how a company handles such cases, especially post-suspension is the difference between the good and the bad. @stub gave us an example of how such a situation can be handled well with proper communication. I've heard similar stories of the same provider but with different outcome, which leads me to believe that its a matter of a little luck who you are speaking to, but generally, when you intend to use accounts in an alternative way letting the provider know in advance would be the best step.

@Rado_Ch - So having an account manager might be good for something, even though they frustrate the hell out of me, by towing the company line. No more "I'll see what I can do" stuff, like it used to be in the good 'ol days.

Hey @133.ct

I recently went through a similar experience, though mine was a more extreme case of "gaming the system" - And boy does it suck, I'm sorry you're going through this!

The domains from my real Godaddy account were transferred MGAA.

Just to clarify, did you transfer your domains from your official Godaddy account to your MGAA?

I have weathered the storm of my experience, and was able to pick up the domains that were deleted a few days later when GoDaddy released them. Though, I was unable to log in to the newly created GD accounts that the domains were deleted from. However, I had received a warning email (that I didn't see) in my existing GoDaddy account. Domains that were purchased using the same prepaid card used in the accounts that were cancelled were also cancelled from my official GoDaddy account, BUT that account wasn't deleted nor were my older domains affected.

The standard customer service number was not able to provide me with additional information, all correspondence had to go through the Account Verify department. If you only held 2 accounts, and you believe you have legitimate reasoning for this aside from "gaming the system" it might be worth your time to contact an account manager.

I told my Account Manager what I was doing and he said it was all ok just so long as I could be contacted via my whois info, by phone, email, or mail.

@stub Do you know if we are all assigned an account manager, or do we have to request one? I have never heard of this, but it would be helpful. Having learned my lesson, I would like to have somebody on the inside of GoDaddy to direct my questions to. I've bought some domains via NamePros, and transferred them to my GD account. My worry is that most likely a promo was used for the initial purchase, and I don't want to be flagged for transferring these domains to my account as each account has a set number of promos used. ie If I used the same .99 promo already, and I transfer domains from NP members who might also have used that same promo leaving me with 2+ domains in my account all initially purchased with the same promo.

@Grilled Jesus - The last time this came up you needed 300 domains in your account to get an Account Rep. Sorry, but I don't have an answer to you about Promo Codes because I don't use them, but I would have thought, any limitation would be with the original registrant. I would not have thought the Promo Code follows the domain around to other GoDaddy Accounts.

This is sad but does appear to be true these days.

@baseballworld - What is sad? 300 domains for an Account Rep, or Promo Codes following the domain around to different GoDaddy Accounts?
