Random Stuff From My Domain Brain

I’d like to start writing some stuff than my domain movers series but that series takes up the vast majority of my time, so I fail to have the energy to write other stuff… and I would love to write all day really but it is what it is. So anyway, here are some random things that I’m thinking and I hope some of my thoughts will help you in some way!

Free Domain Name Server “Spy” Tool

Domainers love free shit and if that is a “tool” that helps in some fashion, all the better! DomainTools.com charges a lot for a “reverse name server” report. The more domains on it, the more expensive it is. This report simply tells you the exact domain names using a specific name server.

Example: Lets say you want to see what domain name Coca Cola owns or may be using in some fashion? First, you need to know what name server they use? I’d use whois and look up a domain you know they own? Coke.com? It displays ns2.ko.com . That is the name server they use for hosting and according to DomainTools, they have over 2,500 domains on it! So how do you see them?

Dan Rubin offers DnsLocator.com which I have used a lot and is very inexpensive and works well. If you are looking for a FREE option, I found one the other day and it’s from gWebTools.com and is called Name Server Spy. It’s free and you simply enter in the full name server like ns1.nameserver.com that you are looking into and click GO. The bad thing? The format the domains are displayed in is horrible! They kind of smash together and there are only a handful of domains in a column etc.. but it gets the job done in a pinch on a budget! I wouldn’t be running a search on a huge name server like domaincontrol.com really using any service… so use it on name servers you really want to see what domains are using it and hopefully there are not a ton on it.

*Note ~ You can also look for domains owned by somebody if you know a specific email address they use with a domain that is registered. I wrote an article a little while back about free ways to do a reverse whois email search.

Domain Name Sales Tools

I look for reported domain name sales all the time and I use many sites like DnJournal.com, NameBio.com, Sedo’s RSS feed, Google searches and a new one I first seen the other day and that is SimilarSales.com. Unique free service that uses keywords in domains and displays similar domain name sales tin many fashions. I think I used it for Mouser.net details page when I was looking for a sales price and it was pretty cool. I stopped back at the site today and played around and really liked the “Recent” tab which uses historical data and displays “Flips” and “Flops” and has a running list of popular “types” of domain names like 3 letter .com domains, 2 letter .com’s, CVCV.com’s, NNNN.com’s etc! If you want to get a quick idea of what a general category of domains is doing, it’s a great place to check out! Clicking on a domain to see the “details” really breaks it down nicely to see similar domain sales, when they happened and where! Heck, you can even see English dictionary word domain sales only and break them down by TLD, which is cool!

Keep in mind that a large majority of domain name sales go unreported. I mean a LARGE amount!

Company Domain Registrations

I often mention in my Domain Movers series that companies register a fair amount of domain names everyday and I only share the ones that make the most sense or grab my eye for some reason! Well, on March 5, 2015 at corporate domain name registrar CSC Corporate Domains, 110 domains were registered and here is the whole list!

I dig these lists (newly hand registered) daily, as well as many others to compile the daily movers series here on DotWeekly. I pick domains out that make sense, then perform a whois search to see who registered them. I try to include registration more on domains I can tell who registered them and are not under whois privacy, but I do include some if I think the domain will really be used for something.

Corporate domain registrar MarkMonitor had similar registration numbers on March 5, with 102 domains registered. The vast majority of large companies use the two mentioned domain name registrars, but they all “hide” domains at huge registrars like GoDaddy and more. Key-Systems, SafeNames, NetNames, NSI are a few more registrars used by large companies and some are using Google Domains.

  1. Seems like almost everyone has a domain listing with affiliate links so they can get paid when someone buys the domains.

That the main problem, so all domainers fighting and bidding against each other.

I wish domaining.com redirect to some other sites , no domaining news for a month, no info about what domains are on sale, I guarantee you, the value of the domains will drop and price of domains will drop.

  2. You are doing very useful work. I am addicted to your posts on domain movers, start-up domains and recent purchases by companies.

    Thank you

    1. Thanks for sharing that one Richard! Looks better than the free one I had mentioned!

  3. Thank you so much for these tips, really much appreciated.

Fortunately there are still some blogs that are worth reading, thanks again.
