Hello all, I have a newbie question here.

I already know that hyphen domains like Dog-Whisperer.com have far less value than same domain without hyphen.

But I wonder if there is still value in those for a quick flip.

e.g. Dog-Whisperer.com is apparaised by Estibot at $6,800 (vs $65k for the non-hyphen version)

Have I any hope to resell it on an auction site like Flippa if I wholesale price it ?

By that I mean an auction starting at 1$, no reserve and BIN set at about 5% of Estibot appraisal.
Is that reasonnable or would no reseller bother to bid on an hyphen domain, no matter its appraisal ?

Thank you.
Hag

Hi Hag

there's always hope

especially on flip, where they love anybody willing to list a domain.

estibot also loves newbies, because that group is their biggest believer and may be best contributor to their coffers

as both charge fee's for using their service.

so, it's in their best interest to tell you what you want to hear, to give you most hope.

keep hope alive!

Good Luck!

Hi

I tend to say, only what I think people need to know

though it's not always, what they want to hear.

the goal is to take the mind, outside the box that it's been put in.

Lesson #1: forget automated appraisal tools, or paid appraisals.

Thanks sdsinc,

So the only way left is to ask for appraisal on forums ?

You need to learn for yourself how to appraise domains, software will not do that for you...

Of course, when you are a beginner, you will want to ask for opinions from experienced members. But keep in mind that appraisals are 'guesstimates'. Domain sales are rather unpredictable. Good appraisals do not mean the domain will sell fast either.
The bottom line is, you should not make high-stakes investment decisions until you firmly understand domain value.

I have worked with domain names for over 15 years, and their appraisals from 'software' driven sites is nowhere close to what they actually sell for. May be they are off by a factor of 50.

Coming to the point, one with hyphen is no good because most likely someone else has name without hyphen and is an active site.
