This has been my nemesis. So difficult to find a business name with the matching .com
Up to this point been using VentureWest.ca
But does the .ca set me back in the world of business? Is it recognized and respected?
I found a name but the .com is gone
I could have the name in .net extension. It is a nice fit, but is .net
I can register the .ca version, but this is a worldwide business venture, as even here there are people from every country in the world.
I can shove a hyphen in there, the hyphen looks/fits ok, but I dont care for hyphen.
Alternate .com available, ends in options. Its nice but my original name I wanted is much nicer. Maybe I continue my search.
My business includes buying/selling names, seo and website development. I also want to trademark a name here shortly, so my name/brand has to fit a variety of ideas.
Is .com THAT important, or .net is ok with marketing efforts. Being Canadian, the .ca makes me tingly but what about someone from Belarus? Does .ca look like a .us, just a flop
Thanks in advance for your input and advice

If you were only targeting Canada the .ca would be perfect. Personally I do not like hyphens in domain names. While .com is preferable, you can still build a successful site under a .net

Either way .com/.net will be much better options for targeting worldwide vs .ca

The .com does have a certain level of prestige and psychological impact to it. If you are choosing a brandable domain name, I'd stick to .com If you are going after specific keywords that users are searching for then .net starts becoming a viable option.

Just my opinion, hope it helps.

As I'm from the UK, I see the .ca extension solely for Canada and wouldn't expect international business.

Is 'Fidget Wanger' just a name you're using to hide the real name, or is that what you're going with?

Always use the .com for an international business.

I have built a couple of websites on .nets before and there are definitely some problems associated with it. As you know, you WILL leak traffic. Further, many people overlook .nets. My girlfriend actually skips them in search results because she associates them with low-quality/spam websites. Interesting to hear the perception from someone who doesn't domain for a living.

It's also important to note that domain websites typically do not received many visitors from organic search because of the lack of content. So you have two ways to drive traffic: links and directs. A .net is only suitable for links.

At the end of the day, you should wait and save up for the perfect .com. You will likely not find anything suitable without looking on the aftermarket.

1) .com will be the standard for at least 15 more years. Best to have the .com and .ca.

2) If you can't get the .com try and get the gtld "Venture.West" and the .ca. gTLDs will make for good international extensions. I also believe gTLD's make for better business tools than .com.

3) If you are planning on only doing business in Canada then the .ca is fine.

4) Best would be to have the .com, .ca and gTLD.

just my 0.02$

Being a startup, and if your customers are younger than say 25, you can use .co.

Simply put .com is the king, I know more and more TLDs are coming almost every day, that is going to create more confusing if not chaos for users, so better stick to the one that had been around for years and 'defacto' standard of internet. .com.

Best.

You could always try contacting the owner of the .com to see if he/she would be willing to sell up.

If you're a startup just grab any domain, start growing, and when that A round of funding comes in you buy the .com.

(*assuming that by "startup" you mean the common definition of an entity whose only mission it is is to grow and scale and maybe someday down the line figure out a business model).

if it is already own, contact domain owner and buy it if you have enough cash / invest (you can also register TM it,later)

rebranding (hand reg now & later upgrade) will also cost a lot and it will suit only for very big companies. IMO.

goodluck mate :)

He is right but grab any similar .com domain so you can resell it when you wont need it anymore (when you buy .com domain which you now want for you business but is too expensive or not avaible)
