    Talk about timing...

Just before 2PM I was reviewing my list of domains and seeing if any are in need of updating or renewal. I keep sort of a master list in a program here that can poll whois and update. One name on there was for a local business that was enticed away by a new local guy here, who promptly lost their name for them. I kept it on the list, just in case it showed signs of being dropped again.

The whois on it showed pending delete, updated like 6 days ago. Ooh, a shot (but drops generally happen about 2PM Eastern)!
Log into Namecheap (the name was at GD), tried registering, no go. The whois on it was weird, showing expiration in May, not April, so I ask NC live chat to peek at it and see if they know why, rather than contact GD since that usually has them toss it into TDnam or something similar. They tell me there's nothing they can do, it's at GD, so ask them. I close the chat, refresh the whois check...it's gone. Someone in Turkey just grabbed it, while I was on the chat.

Timing is everything. Missed by minutes at most.

Don't we have software that will purchase domains for you much quicker than a human can?

I've been out of the buy/sell domain game for over six years now so I don't know (mostly sell, whenever I get a decent offer).

I figured the buying and selling of domain names would be "luck" at this point (ie which software could register faster).

Absolutely. I'm not in the buy/sell game, and this was a sudden "hey, look what might be available soon" kind of find. I would have liked to rescue it from the parking hell it's been subjected to since it was lost, but the name is desirable because of age, and not as much because of what it is (not a keyword of any kind). The timing was surprising, that it was snatched while I discussed it with NC, that's all. Had I just tried a few more times instead of chatting, it may have gone differently.
