GoDaddy breaks new ground with ‘self-deleting domains’ in patent application

GoDaddy, the biggest domain registrar in the world is having a blast of a month; after the April 1st IPO generated a multi-billion dollar valuation, new services are coming.

Hot on the heels of a web site portal redesign comes the launch of “self-deleting domains“.

deletecycle

No longer valid: The old Deletion Cycle.

A patent application (SN: 827822812-2015B) at the USPTO, shows what this is all about:

“[…] the introduction of domain names that are linked to a database marker […] said marker expires in a predefined number of days, allowing the registrant to automate domain deletion without the use of an API or manual intervention. Parameters triggering the deletion event can also be externally introduced, such as a UDRP or drop in PPC revenue.”

It is clear that GoDaddy wants to make it easy for domain investors to register a domain, and if for example your domain isn’t making its registration fees per the linked PPC revenue, you can set the domain to delete itself.

Very useful!

The new “self-deleting” domains by GoDaddy will also prove to be great for those second-rate gTLDs you registered under peer pressure or while under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances.
