I am setting up a new domain but before I do should I consider buying an expired domain name that has some age and links to it? With so many new websites popping up every day I wonder if is it possible to rank any keywords with a fresh domain name and start from sctratch.

Yes, we can get good ranking, for that we need to optimize the website. Need to work out on on page and off page optimization.

Of course it is!
If you find an older domain that you like that was previously used in the same niche, has existing backlinks, and hasn't been used for link spam, then go for it.

A lot of expired / expiring domains get picked up, used and blasted with spam until they're useless. Stay away from those.

If you could find an expired domain with clean backlinks, it might help with initial ranking. But then, the ranking would depend on the quality of the site and how you promote it. So, it doesn't matter much how aged or new the domain is. How you develop and maintain it is more important.

Don't think like this, it depends on you how to work on your website. It is true that domain age is a factor to get good ranking but it doesn't mean that you can't get better ranking position with new domain name. If you are doing your SEO in ethical and effective way, you can easily get your keywords on good ranking positions.

Buying an expired domain is not a safe idea as you do not know about the history of that domain, what kind of backlinks it had, might be it got de-indexed sometimes in past. So buy a new domain name do everything to keep your website neat & clean along with good content and follow ethical techniques in order to promote your website.
