Some time back I wanted to register a .net. I could not find a coupon code in GD. So I went with 1and1 @0.99 cents knowing there were issues with transfer and domainers do not like the registrar. I decided to give it a try.

When I do the fact check, this is what I found. Transfer to another provider link is right there in the domain's control panel:

Where you click on the link, it goes here: The authorization code is mentioned right there and you can enable/disable the lock.

Where you click on "here" it opens to a variety of details. Everything is pretty much clearly laid out. The UI is crisp and fast. I do not see a problem. Also they don't have transfer lock like GD for 60 days when you edit the whois.

Why do domainers dislike 1and1? Once a bad boy is always a bad boy?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I am a beginner, so when I first was looking for cheap domain registration, I found 1and1, made account and tried to register a domain.
After that I received a message, something like "your account is waiting approval"
Some hours later I wrote to them. No reply received.
Then I googled "1and1 scam" and found many people complaining.
So I went to Godaddy.
I have no answer from 1and1 till now.

I have read about many billing nightmares from 1and1. I think many of the complaints come down to the fact that even if you disable auto renewal, you also must cancel the contract that's associated with the domain once it expires or is transferred out. I guess a lot of folks forget to do that and end up getting auto billed. I have transferred names out of 1&1 without any problems or extra charges. They are also rather slow in the transfer process and usually takes about a week to complete.

If you park domains, I would highly suggest using Above.com (or similar service) on 1&1 domains because there is no way to do bulk nameserver updates on 1&1 platform. Just point the nameservers to Above and change your parking provider from Above.com interface. Huge time saver!

When a registrar has their lawyers send you collection letters for a domain you let expire, it creates a lasting impression. :)

How is this done? Can you explain briefly? I have no idea what this is. But I guess this might be a simple thing to do. Only thing is that we must not forget to do it.

Question is if one has Above.com account is he getting automatic access to all name servers of all parking providers? Or is it an interface to use if you already have accounts in individual parking providers?

Ok, so this is the major problem. Does this happen even now?

I have no idea if it still happens. Its not like there is a shortage of registrars with good reputations. Why would I ever want to take the time to test it again?

Correct.

1 & 1 has earned their, well let's say "Not so spectacular" reputation.

Fact: You might not have had a bad experience with 1&1.

Fact: If you keep using them, odds are you will (very high odds).

There is a Cancellation link under domain summary. It can also be done from http://cancel.1and1.com

It's for parking you have existing accounts. You add them to your Above account and then can make folders for providers and select what domains go where. Or use their auto optimize feature to let it automatically decide where to park the names.

Also be warned that 1&1 does not instantly register the name after you order. This can cause you to lose a domain if someone else grabs it beforehand. Sometimes it can take an hour or more to complete the registration.
