transfer domain not email
Hello I am not very experienced with domain transfers, or at least anything other than a straight forward transfer of a domain by changing the name servers and moving all the email. I also apologies if this has been asked a thousand times. I did do a search but could not find any results that answered my question.
My questions is, can I transfer a domain to a new website host without moving the email host? The reason I ask is that the past two times I have done this the clients email has been massively disrupted. One client had a mac and was using apple mail and it really didnt like lossing connection with the old email server? It seemed to loose the old emails until I gave it back its old email server settings.
Any help and clearing up of my confusion would be a great help.

This is really a hosting question more than a domain name question. Do you currently have a package that has name servers, web hosting and email hosting all bundled together? Does you current host offer email-only packages, or packages packages that can be customised? It is certainly possible to mix and match - have name servers with one host, your web site with another one and email with a third one, but not all hosting companies offer this kind of mixing and matching, some simply have their standard packages which include all three and don't give you any choice.

There are several services offer you email hosting without having web site. On your domain name registrar in this case you have modified your MX records. So you can keep your emails in place, but on new domain name registrar after the transfer you will need to edit MX records as well.
Other question how to do that without loosing emails.

Yes, you can transfer the hosting for the domain by adjusting the "A" record only. Your "MX" record should not be changed if you want to keep your current mail server.

Thanks for your helpful replies.
The current host is 1 and 1. I don't think they have separate email and website hosting. I am not sure if they use cpanel I should check. Is it possible to migrate all emails from one host to another if both have cpanel?
On changing the A record, my worry was that this may be negative for SEO. Is this not masking?

If you are using cpanel then you can transfer your website and email both. I think a record setup is not a good idea. How can you setup one domain in two different server/hosting. You can just hosted you subdomain in another hosting, not main domain. I have transferred many accounts. There is no chance to lose emails. You need to restore your email separately. An another solution is that, ask your new hosting provider to migrate your hosting accounts to them. They will transfer your full account with email server to server and no data will losing.

normally, a hosting comes with the email service as well. If you move your domain name away but you do not move the emails, it means you will pay twice: one for hosting your site and one for hosting your mails
If you would not mind to pay twice, then it is OK. My suggestion is to have everything shifted to your new host and you can safe costs and management headache too.

backup all your data, transfer all your backup data to your new host, and you can keep your domain and email address.
Enjoy life today, because yesterday is gone, and tomorrow is never promised.

Not necessarily. Some companies offer packages that include the lot (name servers, web, email) and will only let you buy the full package. Some companies offer them separately, so you can get your name servers from Company A and your web hosting from Company B and your email from Company C - and you join them all up by logging into your control panel wiyh Company A and setting your A and MX records to point to Company B and Company C respectively.

I think the best way is to ask your new hosting provider to do transfer for you.
It is very easy to do cpanel transfer if you have server with root access on one end (not needed for you to have root on your cpanel)
