NamePros is able to reveal that the domain 4G.com has been sold very recently, with the news breaking on LinkedIn and in a NamePros thread on Thursday night.
Bhanu Prasad - the owner of 4G.com - posted the news in a domain sellers group on LinkedIn but couldn't reveal the price paid for the domain, although he did say in a subsequent comment that the buyer "Paid Bomb to acquire [sic]." It was also revealed that the domain wasn't sold to an end user, but rather a domain investor.
Although details of the buyer haven't been released (and the domain remains under privacy protection), the general assumption is that this is a domain investor from China. Recently, Chinese domain investors have flocked to the domain aftermarket to acquire short .COM domains - in particular, numerical .com domains and 3-letter .com domains.
According to NameBio, the last publicly recorded 2-character .COM domain sale was H6.com, which was sold by eNaming.com to a Chinese investor for $115,000.
4G.com currently shows a basic website with a number of articles related to 4G technology - the latest publicly available mobile technology providing high-speed Internet access (around 6 Mbps in the UK) for phones and tablets.
I reached out to Bhanu today, and he was kind enough to take time to comment on the sale. He was able to confirm that the sale of 4G.com was a high six-figure deal.
Bhanu also told me that he sold another domain he owned: 5N.com recently for a low six figure fee - again, to a Chinese investor.
Around 100 premium domains owned by Bhanu are still for sale, including H4.com, 4L.com, DUF.com, and JDU.com.
