The title that catches the eye, isn't it?
Andrei Polgar has published this article which states that domainers, especially newbies should be realistic about the price that they are asking for a domain names. In this regard, staying informed is of utmost importance.

Here is a glimpse of what the article contains:

"Many domainers, especially beginners who haven’t been in contact with all that many (if any) end users thus far, believe these elusive end users are a special kind of breed: humans who have limitless quantities of money at their disposal. They read about all sorts of blockbuster sales and believe that when end users end up contacting them to inquire about a domain, they’re set for life.

Unfortunately, things are a bit more complicated.

I’m afraid most end users don’t own money trees and as such, the budgets they have for domain acquisitions might prove to be less spectacular than you’d have expected. Yes, million dollar sales for example can and do occur but they represent an extremely small percentage of the overall domain transaction volume. Realistically speaking, the average domain sales price is closer to the low 4 figure zone than to the “I can now retire” threshold.

Average sales price of a dot com has been $2,496, whereas for dot nets, we’re looking at $1,546.

A very good article and this doesn't only account for selling to end users but also for a lot of people that try to sell domains to other domainers (such as here on NP). Be realistic about the resell value of your domains.
