Transferring from 1and1?

NameSilo
Watch
I've been considering transferring some names to 1and1 because of the renewal cost seems reasonable but I've read a lot of bad reviews about them. I've never used 1and1 before, don't even have an account there yet.

Later on down the line, if I decide to transfer away, am I going to have some problems or should I be OK?

Having domains with them is like playing Russian roulette, except that there are 3 bullets in the gun instead of just one. It seems like you get about have the people having problems and the other half are not having any.

Personally, I wouldn't use them because the stress isn't worth it. If you do decide to use them, don't use them for your higher-end domains you want to sell or any that you might want to keep, develop or already have sites on.

Another thing to consider, if you are trying to sell domains that are reg'd or kept there can have a big impact on if people are willing to even attempt to buy. It can be a negative value hit when trying to sell a domain and they are the registrar.

BTW, their renewal costs are higher than most. Perhaps you meant transfer or reg.Their renewal costs for .com's is at the $15 mark. Namesilo has renewal rates at about $6 less than 1&1. Them I would be much much more willing to trust since they have a good rep.

Personally I use Namecheap for names I am gonna keep. GD was for the reg's & sales but it looks like that's gonna change due to their coupon code issues as of late.

Thanks for the input.

They have the lowest renewal and transfer rate for domains on a specific tld, they're not .coms

I like Namesilo and Namecheap, I use them both but their transfer/renewals are steep for this tld, otherwise I wouldn't have even considered not using them first.

I read about the transfer-out process on their website and transferring from 1and1 to GD on GoDaddy's site and everything seems ABC as any other registrar so I'm confused as to what exactly could be the problem?

1and1 sucks. They are worst IMHO.

If you're planing to transfer domains away for two months, you can transfer them to register.it, $0.50 per transfer includes one year extension to expiry (.COM, NET, ORG, EU) and no coupon code needed.

I have transferred 20+ there and I will transfer back to GoDaddy after two months.

I have asked them and they say that there is no admin fee for transfer out after two months.

That sounds interesting, but I'd definitely have to get more feedback and do some more research on them before trusting them with any of my stuff at that price. And I see their site is in Italian.

That's all I read about 1and1 on forums is that they suck, but why? Anyone have any examples?

Not worth going to 1and1 at any price, ever. Try googling 1&1 and phrases like "sucks" and "stolen domains" and "transfer problems" and "collection agency".

People have lost valuable domains there because mysteriously they would not renew then 1&1 took over the domain and offered it for sale.

Had some domains there and it was hell to transfer them out - whole other hidden control panel and login, especially if you do not want to renew - you think you have set a domain to NOT renew (or in fact you know you have transferred it out) then they charge for it or send a collection agency without warning. I would not give them any payment details knowing that, and they are hard to reach.

Not worth the stress and risk and not worth keeping them alive to rip off others.

ehhhh....

I don't think that's right to just accept a company can do whatever they want like that. I feel like giving them a call and asking them straight up if they'd rip me off and give them examples of what I find online and see what they say.

There is option to change language at bottom. Do your research before trying any registrar.

Hello,

A little off topic:

I had similar experience with a Swedish host and it's just not worth it. Poor and extremely slow support, very difficult to transfer domains away and confusing (sometimes not working) control panel.

To be fair, I haven't tried 1&1, but I have never seen a positive review about them. Their reg fees for new gTLDs are the best on the market, but with all hassle from the Swedish host in mind, I have decided to use hosts that I trust: Uniregistry, Dynadot, GoDaddy and Namecheap (+ United Domains for pre regs).

On topic:

If you want to test them, why not buy a few very cheap ones (.COM, .XYZ, .US etc) and try to update name servers, transfer one or two domains out from there etc. If you have the time.

They have a bad rep and their thing is hosting anyway, I would use a real registrar instead...

You say it's for a specific TLD, so I would visit the registry website and fetch the list of accredited registrars. Then do your shopping and compare.

You are most welcome.

Since you didn't state the tld, I just went on the .com. I do understand that you need to save money, but as straight forward as their transfer process seems, it's not always that easy.

Many people on this forum have had nightmares in dealing with them, so you have to ask yourself if it's worth taking the chance. Either in losing a sale, losing the domain itself, or the stress that they have been known to cause.

Personally, I would rather beat my head on a wall then deal with the stress that dealing with them or someone like them can cause. A few dollars just isn't worth it in my opinion.

Namecheap is my preferred registrar, but I know some tld's are a bit pricey. There has got to be another registrar other than 1&1 that could be a happy middle, right?

I've recently transferred 25 domains from 1&1 to Godaddy. The transfer process wasn't that hard. As usual. The problem is after the transfer has been completed, and the domains are now in my Godaddy panel, and the whois data confirms it. But anyhow, the same domains still are shown in my 1&1 account, too.

I haven't yet talked with a 1&1 customer rep. about that, but I'm pretty sure that they'll rebill it on the renew date, eventhough the autorenew was off, and eventhough the domain has been transferred to another registrar.I think you need to completely cancel the package the domain was in, in order not to get billed.

I'll re-post after I learn the process.

This answers anyone that have a confusion with 1 and 1. He was able to transfer out successfully. The domains are still showing in control panel is because he has not deleted the contract yet. Delete the contract and you are done.

As stated above, this will be fine sometimes, while other times it won't be that easy.

All anyone needs to do is do a Google search and find out that it isn't always that easy.

Sometimes it might be worth taking a chance, but with domains that you value, you might not want to risk.

Too many people have had issues with 1&1 for it to be worth the risk to many.

That part is not easy to do, not easy to understand, and not easy to locate the separate login for it. And as Ulterios said, it doesn't always work.

When I had problems with 1&1 they would always just say to try repeating the procedure. Then they said they could not do it by email and gave a UK number to ring. The number did not work. Finally after a lot of complaints I got to communicate by email with some native speakers of English in the USA. All very very time consuming, just because they renewed a domain I had told them not to.

When I tried to pay by Paypal the payments always failed, and they would say try again but in the end I concluded they couldn't actually process Payal. Meantime the collection agency letters turned up for the domains I was trying to pay for with Paypal, so very reluctantly I had to use a credit card.

Look at this thread about 1&1 and the USA Better Business Bureau, also called the BBB https://www.namepros.com/threads/how-did-1and1-com-wipe-their-bbb-rating.708137/
