Spaceship Spaceship
In the first of a mini series looking at the domain names that Chinese investors own, we look at the amount of two and three letter .com domain names that are owned by individuals or companies in China. The data here is courtesy of DomainTools.

WHOIS data isn’t perfect, especially from China, so the actual numbers could be a little higher than this, but the amount of 3 letter .com domain names owned in China is currently 2,078 out of a possible 17,576 domain names. This equates to 11.82% of LLL.com domains are owned in China.

The number was lower than I expected, but letter combinations play a large part in which domains the Chinese invest in, which could account for the fairly low percentage owned in China. As you’ll find out later in this series, numeric domain names have far more interesting statistics.

Recent high value LLL.com sales to Chinese companies or individuals include QUA.com for $459,000 (which is now used as the homepage for the international homepage of a Chinese travel website), PPP.com for $290,000, HQB.com for $160,000, VVV.com for $136,400 and KHC.com for $120,000.

We don’t have a comparison to last year or the year before, but it’s well-known that Chinese investors have acquired many LLL.com domain names, so I’d expect figures for this time last year, or 2013, to be lower than the current 2,078 domains owned in China.

Two letter .com domain names are highly sought after by Chinese domain investors, with multiple high value domain sales being reported. In fact, a contact of mine has confirmed that GG.com, YN.com and QT.com have been sold to China very recently. SX.com, WE.com, NL.com and QE.com have also all been sold this year.

According to DomainTools, 105 out of 676 possible LL.com domain names are owned in China, which equates to 15.53%. This information was provided on July 26th/27th, 2015, and doesn't include names owned in Hong Kong. George Kirikos has performed his own analysis of LL.com domain names today, in which he states that 115 LL.com domains (17% of total) are owned in China.

The USA still owns around 58% of LL.com domains, according to George's analysis.

This equates to 11.82% of LLL.com domains are owned in China.

I'm surprised by this number considering roughly 1/7 people in the world live in China.
