domains What GoDaddy Won't Tell You

Spaceship Spaceship
Go Daddy’s people are standing by via phone and Internet chat, but there’s a few things you aren't going to hear from GoDaddy’s finest.

WHO SAID DISCO(UNT) IS DEAD?

Okay, so the days of using 99 cent coupons to register HomemadeMiniPickles.com for your grandmother‘s secret recipe are over, but there are still coupons available and you should be taking advantage of them.
  • If you are a new account with a fresh credit card, you can get a single dot com for $2.99 (1st year price) when you register for 2 years or more by going here (select "Domain Deals"). Additional years at standard price.
  • After that, get as many dot com's as you can using the codes PHD3 and REV10 by paying only $8.49 apiece. They’ll work multiple times for multiple domains. This is a better deal than the Discount Domain Club price of $8.29 (not including the ICANN fee of $0.18) that requires a $120 annual fee.
  • There are some perks with the Discount Domain Club, like free Domain Auction membership, discounts on other TLD's, etc. If you decide to go for the DD Club purchase, use the coupon code DDCDS2015 and get 30% off (special thanks to Shane for the code).
  • Got the winning bid at a GoDaddy auction? Using coupon code CJCRMN35 will get you 35% off on the renewal fee at the time of checkout.
For more squeal-of-a-deal coupon codes, check out the amazing NamePros thread that’s dedicated solely to GoDaddy Coupons. The coupons may be affiliate codes, but they are not mine.

FRIENDS DON’T LET FRIENDS BUY DRUNK

In the old days when I went to college, we got drunk and ran across the campus naked. But now? You youngin’s are celebrating your inebriation by buying domain names.

Yeah, domain names like DeepFriedPixels and PronShd (both in dot com of course). If you don’t believe me, just read this story at Yahoo News.

Should you become the unintended victim of a night of Internet debauchery, don’t worry. You can get a refund!
  • Many domain name registrations are fully refundable within 5 days of the time of purchase.
  • Monthly products can be refunded if cancelled within 48 hours.
  • Annual products can be refunded (prorated) if cancelled within 45 days of purchase.
  • Automatic one-year renewals may be cancelled within 45 days but manual renewals have a refund window of only 5 days.
GoDaddy is not so forgiving with auctions and other products, so check the refund policy and read the fine print carefully.

RESURRECTING THE DEAD

Did you forget to renew your favorite domain? No worries, you can rise like a Phoenix and live again! The domain can be yours a second time at no extra cost for up to 12 days 18 days after expiration. You can even grab it for several weeks after that by paying a $80 penalty or you can transfer it to another registrar at the receiving registrar's standard transfer-in price to avoid the $80 fee. See the GoDaddy help page for more details.

--

So if you’re hungover, got amnesia, or are just plain stupid and forgetful like me - don’t worry, GoDaddy’s got your back with an array of coupons, refunds, and second chances that are sure to keep your money-making, domain train, right on track.

Have you got a “domains I bought under the influence” story? Know any GoDaddy tips or tricks? Tell us about it in the comment section below.

Nice article Keith. Just for information you can use "CJCRMN35" for DDC with 35% off rather than using "DDCDS2015" for 30% off

If your portfolio is large enough, ask your assigned Godaddy rep for a FREE discount Domain club. All you have to do is say you are gonna switch and they fold like lawn chairs ;)

We've corrected the blog to say 18 days. Thanks!

If you're a member of DDC, I don't think you'll even see a field for discount code at checkout. I don't. Probably because I'm already getting a discounted rate.

I sometimes have to enter my validation code 5 or 6 times before the page actually loads (happens on multiple computers I use), non-the-less as a domainer, having a GoDaddy account is simply a must. GoDaddy is the toll gate on the domainer's highway.

It's still there, but they've managed to make it harder to find. There's no box, but if you look up around the top right there's a radio button with something like "Promo Code?"

In fact, you'll see the text "Have a promotional code?" and next to that you can click the "Add" button to enter your promo code.

Why can't I edit the post I just created? >:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(>:(

Nice article Keith, but you need to correct some wrong information. That link/domain deal that you listed for $2.99 is not correct. You can't get a domain for $2.99. You can get the first year of a 2 year registration for $2.99 which comes to around $18.

You should maybe add that the $2.99 is for the 1st year of a 2 year registration. That's a big difference between someone thinking they are getting a domain for only $2.99 and actually having to put out around $18 for a domain.

Adding or correcting the information to be accurate might help to avoid some confusion.

Other than that, it was a nice article. :)

He probably did not try to use the coupon code at godaddy and all he saw or heard was $2.99.
But still, a bit of good information there for people on this forum who have no clue about godaddy so thus all the threads basically asking the same questions.

Oh wow I didn't know that about the 5 days, I just reg'd a domain with a typo when I was really tired. I will try to call them tomorrow about crediting my account and canceling that. Or is there a way online?

Thanks for the alert. I've corrected it now to include those additional points. :P

You can call them or do it via Live Chat.

In my shopping cart I can see a field for a discount code, even though I am a DDC member until next Jan (2016)...

Just tried it - received this message:

This promotional code does not apply to renewals and requires a $1.00 minimum order. Add $1.00 in new products to save 35%.

Even if I added $1 in new products, it would probably take 35 cents off that $1 and nothing off the $119.

Would have loved for that to work though, thanks anyway!

Good post, one small remark though. People usually get into the domain discount club not because of discounts on domain registrations but because of the huge discounts on renewals. There are no coupon codes for renewals (at least not anything that brings the price under $10 USD for .com renewals). I'm paying $8.47 for com renewals right now because of DDC and that's unlimited btw (Paid around $74 for a year membership on the DDC). If you have a big portfolio the DDC is worth it.

There's another way to get the famous DDC discounts on .com domain renewals without actually having a DDC membership. Simply renew 101 or more .com domains at the same time and you'll get the same discount as on the DDC (8.47 USD per .com renewal) . Of course not all people have over 100 .com domains to renew ;)

Just use Uniregistry.com and save a ton of money on renewals. Gddy is laughing at you.
Been contacted by uniregistry numerous time asking me to join their registrar (never joined any of their mailing lists so I'm not sure how I ended up with these emails, maybe because I use their domainnamesales platform for a couple of my domains ). They even offered me custom pricing (which was nice I admit).

In the end I didn't choose uniregistry for 2 simple reasons:

1. They couldn't go under $8.47 per .com renewal and that's what I'm paying at Godaddy. So it makes no sense to me to make the effort to transfer around 700 domains to uniregistry when it's cheaper (and less time-consuming) for me to renew them at Godaddy.

2. End-users usually know Godaddy. Whenever I do a domain transaction buyers feel more secure imo because they know the domain is at a registrar that is globally known and trusted. How many end-users know Uniregistry?

The key point IMO. There's basically a universal familiarity with GoDaddy that most other registrars simply don't have.

When my DDC renewal came up, GD didn't accept any renewal codes. I had to let my DDC expire (~2 weeks for me) and then re-purchase DDC with the code. This was a few months ago.
