Someone offered to buy my domain (is it legit?)

I own a domain I bought many years ago and in total its 16 years old. I have been away from web design and domains for about 5 years now so I am almost new to the game. Someone sent me a email yesterday offering to buy my domain for a large sum. They said in the email that they would pay all the escrow fees and so on. I haven't dealt with escrow for 10 years and I have no clue if this person is starting some kind of ruse. The domain is good so the offer doesn't suprise me as I've got offers for it monthly for years, what surprises me is the amount.

Can someone tell me if there is some kind of scam going around these days? What should be my next step to proceed. I definitely want to sell for the offer but have major reservations as I'm preparing that it's most likely a scam. Hope someone helps me out.

If they're willing to go through escrow, you choose which one. I've used escrow.com with no complaints (same as you, large offer out of the blue, turned out to be legit). If they suddenly say they want an appraisal, that's a red flag. Any estimate on the worth of the name is on them, not you. If they've made an offer, that's the offer for you to take or reject.

Thanks for the reply, so I should go on escrow.com and sign up first. Anywhere I can read something to get the exact steps in setting it all up for a smooth transaction? Also the person offered the big sum or asked me to tell him how much I want. What should I ask for? the offer was in low $xxxxx

Depending on what you plan to do with the domain, I would go with his offer. If you make too much high of a bid and they reject it, you will remain with the domain. Also, they are getting less value now with new TLD on the market. I would sell it, but using a secure environment in which you feel comfortable.

Last I'd looked they had all the info you need on that site. It's been a while since that last deal, however.

If you'd be happy with the price, don't get greedy. If you feel it's lower than it's worth, counter offer, but be realistic.

+1 for escrow.com. Its how I personally have purchased and sold all domain names. Its a very easy and safe system.

Should i update my whois settings to my actual address? I moved a couple months ago and it still has my old address. Does it matter when selling?

Its always good to have updated Whois Info, but with you being the seller I do not think escrow.com checks that.

Basically the way it works. You agree on a price, enter that into Escrow.com with the domain name. Buyer pays Escrow.com. You send the seller the EPP Transfer Key so they can transfer the domain to their register of choice. You approve the transfer. Escrow.com sees the domain name was transferred releases the funds.

Im sure there are minor details I am leaving out, but as I mentioned, its a quick, fairly painless process and the only way to buy or sell a domain name in my opinion.

If you don't use the domain that much I would go through with it, escrow.com seems legit.

Thanks guys, buyer accepted tranfer on escrow and all i'm waiting for now is escrow to complete the last step in verifying the deal before releasing the funds to me. Do you guys know if escrow works on Saturdays (business day) Hope it's not monday - friday. I still can't believe i sold this domain. I bought it for $209 a couple years ago. I think it won't hit me till I get my escrow check in the mail.
