    * Beware if you have domains with name.com!

2 days ago, I was automatically charged by name.com for 4 domains that I did not intend to renew.

Having checked my name.com control panel, I noticed that all my domains had been set to "Auto-Renew".
    I wrote to name.com
Please cancel these transactions and return the funds to my account credit.

Please remove auto renew from all my domains. I had never set it up; it is a bug of your interface.

All my domains have always and will always be set for manual renew.
    And they replied
I hope your day is going well. I apologize for the delayed response. As a one time courtesy, we offer customers a 5 day grace period in which we will refund customers that have mistakenly registered or renewed a domain.
They don't seem to get the point, or don't want to admit any mistake.

If you have domains with name.com, I recommend you check urgently if "Auto-Renew" has been activated without your permission.

GoDaddy has been known to pull the same crap. That is why I don't leave a real credit/debit card number on file with most registrars. I change it to a "test" number. This way, when/if something magically unchecks the no-auto-renew setting, they can't charge a bogus card.

In ~10 years Name.com has never activated "Auto-Renew" on me. It is solely a client input.

That's Name.com's default setting - they're not the only ones; in any case, once it's disabled, they don't re-enable it. I know that because I've been with Name.com, have registered and renewed about 10-15 domains with them and what you say has never happened.

They likely made no mistake; you most likely didn't disable Auto-renew of turned on by mistake yourself.

It's not a glitch. If you fill out automatic billing, then it's enabled and shows the second you login if a domain is set to autorenew or not. It has saved me a number of times.

They can't win either way. If they disable it, people will complain. If it's enabled, people complain. Filling out billing info is kinda a giveaway though.

I have been with name.com for many years and I know that I never had auto-renew enabled.

I am the only one to access my account.

Unless a hacker managed to steal my login details and change all domains to auto-renew, it is a bug in my interface. Glad it doesn't affect everyone.

You must have - maybe involuntarily or by accident (I did that - accidentally turned auto-renew on and noticed it one month later) - or they wouldn't have automatically billed you.
If you're 100% sure you didn't do anything, it's indeed a bug and you should report it to the related dept.

Did you pay with PayPal? If yes, have you checked if you set up any subcrisption with Name.com? If you did, delete them as they will over-ride any disabled Auto-renew.

Thanks for the heads up, but I always take screenshots of any transaction I perform online. That way, there's no guessing whether I did or did not click auto renew.

I guess you did not disable the auto renew when you have joined with them, many companies enable auto renew option by default.

OP says he didn't; imo he did it by accident as, if there was a bug like he suggests, we'd have sees other Name.com's clients coming here to complain about such a (not so small) issue.
Either that or he forgot to delete a PayPal subscription with Name.com - those over-ride any enabled/disabled auto-renew.

Problem solved thanks to the (always) efficient support from name.com

They refunded the amount, and changed the setting to exclude auto-renew from all my domains.

According to them, Auto-renew had been automatically activated on all my domains when I changed the default payment method from Paypal to "Account credit". I like to keep my account in credit with 200-300$... so, obviously, I was not going to pay by Paypal when renewing domains whereas my account was in credit.

Good customer service, but fishy concept.

So, my warning stays is place: if you are with name.com and make any changes to your account, check that Auto-renew has not been activated against your will. And complain if it has.
