From my understanding:

Expired: The name was not renewed on it's renewal date. The owner still has a grace period of 2-3 weeks to renew domain.

Dropping: After the grace renewal period, the domain goes into a whats called a redemption grace period where you no longer get to pay the basic renewal price but you have to pay a redemption fee between $80-90 dollars to recover the domain. Some registrars auction the names in this period to try and make a profit instead of allowing the name to drop. But if the original owner choose to redeem the name they will keep it even if someone won the name in auction..

Dropped:
This means the domain owner did not renew the domain in the general, grace or redemption period. So the domain is released back in general availability for anyone to register at the basic price. Alot of companies use software to try and capture these names as soon as they drop they drop before the general public can get to them. Then they run auctions to make big profit. Or sometimes people backorder these names and that would also go to auction if two or more backorders were made.
