A $16.95 it seem you are paying for private WHOIS.
https://domains.google.com has .com at $12 including private WHOIS.

If you need WHOIS privacy, I always go with http://hover.com. They provided free WHOIS privacy, transfer price is $10.99, most renewal prices will be around the same though.

The renewal price increases are supposed to be for .net domains only based on their CP and the email I received.
As far as the price for whois privacy they have a discount code that lets you renew at $.99 each. The code <<not allowed here>> is found around the web.
If you want to transfer and need privacy then ******** is good and cheap with free privacy. Less than $9 per domain to transfer.Last edited by bear; 01-27-2016 at 09:21 PM.

Wow, that's hard to believe. However, I doubt it's because of business practices and more likely some rules violations here. I've used them for only a few months but they have been good as well as having a good reputation elsewhere. I bought a domain portfolio that had some names there, which is why I have an account there.
OT: If the op doesn't want to use them then the best bet would be to stay at Namecheap and use the privacy code I posted above since he needs privacy.Follow me on Twitter HERE and keep up with my random babbling and sometimes informative Tweets!
