Slower Week in the Domain Aftermarket - Chalk it Up to the Chinese New Year?

The past week was a slow one for aftermarket domain sales, but perhaps not a surprising one given the outsized role Chinese buyers have had in domain sales for many months now. A couple of weeks ago several sources told me to expect a slowdown as festivities surrounding the Chinese New Year arrived. Las Sunday night was their NewYear's Eve, Monday (February 8) was New Year's Day and many offices in China are closed all of this week (which means we can likely expect another slow sales week next week). 

Against that backdrop only one reported sale reached high five figures. That was Zandibot's $87,000 sale of Scripts.com to the Stands4 Network (known for Acronyms.com and Abbreviations.com). 

Sedo filled out the rest of the top five with a quartet of .coms. #2 StarSelect.com commanded $21,660, #3 VacationUSA.com yielded $20,000, #4 Sexkontakte.com tallied $18,240 and #5 4820.com drew $14,251. The latter domain was the only one on this week's all extension Top 20 Sales Chart that fit the mold Chinese buyers typically pursue - short .com domains consisting of 2-4 numbers or letters (other than those containing vowels and the letter "V").

With the nature of the charted names indicating Chinese buyers are taking a holiday break, the big question now is will they be back in the dominating fashion we have seen before this month ends? 

The .coms wound up sweeping 15 of 21 entries on the Big Board (a tie for the final spot accounting for the extra position). SnapNames contributed to the .com onslaught with #6 Tesila.com at $14,000.

All of the remaining slots were filled by non .com gTLDs with five of the six in that group representing new gTLD .Club who released their list of premium sales for January. Those sales were made through a variety of channels, including registrars and the RightOfTheDot/NameJet live domain auction staged at NamesCon. The two biggest sales in this category came from the auction - #7 (tie) Strip.club at $10,000 and #12 Athletic.club at $9,000. The only non .club name in this "club" was #20 (tie) ThoughtLeaders.net, sold for $5,500 via SnapNames.

The ccTLDs were shut out for the second week in a row with all reported sales from that category coming in below $5,000. Here is how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016:

.Com Supporting Cast

Sedo led the .Com supporting cast of additional four-figure sales with Beyoux.com at $5,415. 44S.com fetched $5,079 and three others - DeepHarbour.com, OpenWebGame.com and OpenWebGames.com - went for $5,000 each.

Canna-Tech.com tacked on $4,980, ChannelD.com tuned in $4,950 and Xerolan.com landed $4,888. HomeSprint.com spawned $4,500, Vilor.com captured $4,250 and 888733.com dialed in $4,044.

Sedo had 32 more four-figure sales ranging from $2,000 to $3,990 that are listed in the table below:

Back at SnapNames StockCheck.com found $5,099, PotLocker.com secured $4,444, Megabits.com made $3,450 and TedTalk.com attracted $3,433. Aandd.com added $3,120, NewState.com notched $2,609 and QFWM.com corralled $2,240. 

Elsewhere, TheDomainAgency.co.uk sold CourierDirect.com for $4,255 and Webcraft Domains sold LUUU.com for $2,610 via Flippa. 

Country Codes

While the aftermarket had a slow week in general it was doubly slow for the the ccTLDs with only a dozen sales reported in that category and all of those were below $5,000. That left the door open for Sedo's $4,446 sale of BestBaby.de to take the top spot on our  latest Country Code Top Sales Chart.

A pair of sales at Golem.eu - QTG.de at $3,420 and SoftPro.eu at $3,419 - filled the next two slots with III.co ($3,000) and Meinplakat.de ($2,964), both at Sedo, rounding out the first five. 

Sedo accounted for 9 of the 12 reported sales. DomainLore.co.uk had the one that did not go to Sedo or Golem - that was #12 G7.co.uk at $1,208.

Non .com gTLDs (.net, .org, .biz, .info & others, including new gTLDs)

With the release of their January premium sales list .Club piled up 13 of the 20 entries on our  latest Non. Com gTLD Top 20 Sales Chart, including nine of the top 10. There were led by the five domains you saw on the all extension leader board earlier with additional help from #7 Glass.club ($5,425) and seven others.

The remaining spots on the leader board went to three .nets, three .orgs and a new gTLD - #15 (tie) A.domains that Jens Weegar sold via Sedo for $2,736.

There were five more four-figure sales off the chart - all from .Club's January premium sales list. Those were info.club at $1,691 (via eNom), ACI.club at $1,017 (through 1API) and three others - Cache.club (goDaddy), GXY.club (EJEE Group) and VEG.club (GoDaddy) - at $1,000 each.
