Can you remove the stupid dislike button please? It creates a bad atmosphere when people publicly state they don't like you (which is how it appears and how it feels).

I have just contacted two members asking them to say to my face that they don't like me. Is that what you want?

It is very bad for the community feel of the place. It is wholely negative, not to mention thoroughly pointless.

If you really must have a silly button, have "disagree", or possibly thumbs up and thumbs down.

For me, it puts me off coming here, so I will only do so if I have to.

Yes, dislike button creates more harm than good...
If a member thinks a post is inappropriate then report option can be used..

How do you think the dislike button feels?

It doe's seem a bit harsh to be dis'n but its more democratic to polarize the options, replace it with different name or logo might be no harm.

To be democratic I agree with "Disagree" rather than "Dislike".

I'm not sure why you allowing it to become such a big deal.

You mentioned that:
"I have just contacted two members asking them to say to my face that they don't like me. Is that what you want?"

I think going through the effort to personally contact two members who clicked "dislike" on your posts and calling them out is a rather harsh. I mean why do care so much that they "dislike" you? So what, they are entitled to not to like you if they want. That's their choice, You also have a choice, you can choose to make a bit issue about it OR you can choose not to give a cr@p. Let me assure you, not giving a cr@p is for more liberating than doing what you are currently doing.

Just ignore and move on, if someone dislikes you.

It is not personal if you get a dislike one a post.
Just move one, change your mind not the world around it.(:
You are free to dislike my post.

IMHO Way too much time already spent on this, just move on. You are going to get opinions on the internet, bringing out a spotlight on what pushes your buttons is only asking for more dislikes out of spite/trolling.

As long as your wife and kids love you, thats all the love you need.

Let NPers dislike some of your posts without being affected by it.

They dislike your opinion, not you.

No need to get rid of dislike button.

Interesting point. How can you dislike somone's opinion? An opinion is a right and should be respected, you might disagree with it but that's a different matter and why a "disagree" button would be better, if there really must be a button.

Keep the dislike button IMO. Not that I've used it that much... Anyway, as long it's there, it prevents, to an extent, people from going batS#%* crazy. Or that's how I see it... If feelings are hurt, eat chocolate or something.

Thanks for the feedback and suggestion.

We named it Dislike because that's the antonym of Like.

There are different names used for this type of system (Like and Dislike vs. Thumbs up and Thumbs down vs. Upvote and Downvote), but they are all the same: expressions of what is liked and not liked. There are many reasons for their use, and Disagree wouldn't fit the majority of them.

Here is a small list of the reasons someone might dislike a post:
  • It violated the rules
  • It's negative
  • It's rude or disrespectful
  • It provided no value to the conversation (e.g., a post that says, "Hmm" and nothing else)
  • It lacked depth or cohesion
  • It was off topic
  • Etc.
It serves as an easy and subtle way for members to let other members know that what they're posting (whether it be video, text, image, audio) is not appreciated. It then allows them to either learn from it or ignore it.

If anyone else would like to see the Dislike option removed, please Like the first post. We'll keep an eye on it.

Thanks.

I think the dislike button is a useful button to label extreme posters (scammers, misinformation, etc).

As is part of life in general, some people will like you, some won't. I don't think the dislike is generally used as a way of personally attacking people on here, but if it does get used that way then perhaps not using it as a form of attack/tarnishing one's image should be a rule on it and complete with punishments for its abuse.

Primarily this should be a place to conduct business and interact. Part of those interactions will involve disagreements. It's just part of life. Try not to take it so personally. They likely are not attacking you personally, but if they are @Eric Lyon then this is one circumstance where I believe there should be punishments / constraints on its usage.

I don't think I have ever used the Dislike button, but I have reported posts. Dislike seems too harsh, so if there were a disagree button I would use it. So it seems to be a matter of interpretation, similar to the difference between Like and Thank, I use and view Thank as a stronger Like, and if it's particularly special I tag and/or quote someone to really show appreciation.

Maybe an additional disagree button would be similar for the negative.

End of the day, as much as a person has a right to gave an opinion on here, people have just as much of a right to 'dislike' this opinion.

Yeah, I've seen this feature used by arseholes being arseholes, but can't see why it should bother anyone.

maybe you should "add" a button

one that says...."reg-fee"

:)

I use it as a "Disagree" button, not as a "Dislike" button and think it is a great way to show if you agree or disagree with an opinion (especially in forums like the appraisal threads). If people take it personally, then maybe they are in the wrong business? I would support changing the name to reduce tension, however. But to remove it, removes a critical way to give an opinion without adding a million extra posts IMHO.

I think it does indeed serve it's purpose and shouldnt be removed.

I will just leave this here, feel free to dislike :P

@Charles Sweeney

You think this post should not have received a dislike? It's not a helpful post in a thread that was already (like most appraisals) becoming contentious.
Do I think it deserved a dislike? That whole thread did! You must have known that a flippant response in a thread like that was high-risk of getting a dislike but you did it anyway. I would think it's just best to move on and not worry about it.

I vote for thread level upvoting / downvoting based on that :)

He's been gone since the post so maybe he really is bothered. Oh well, hopefully he'll be back

@DU And the OP in that thread has been suspended as well.

Since this thread, I have used the Dislike button, where rules were broken or members were blatantly annoying : grin :

Upon reflection, I haven't used it as to not be too harsh with people, AND I don't want retaliation in return : Switzerland :

However, if they take exception, I can point them to Eric's post above and/or share my reasons

In true neutrality, I have UNLIKED my Like of the first post
