Hello,

First off, I am a total novice and don't know if I'm even posting to the right website... Secondly this question might have been asked many times before, but I couldn't find the answer- please forgive me if this is the case and for my simplistic knowledge of the subject.

Here is my question:

I have an idea for a business for which I came up with a specific name and I'd like to acquire the .com domain. Visiting the website shows that it's owned by Namebright and it says the website is 'coming soon'. It's been like this for maybe 2 years now, so I'm guessing they're holding on to it to sell to someone like me.

The name is short, but I doubt that it is particularly in demand since it's fairly obscure and wouldn't generally be reached by generic searches.

I don't know how these things work, but should I contact Namebright with my intention to buy and make an offer? How much should I offer and will they negotiate? I thought about waiting until it expires, but I'm certain they'll simply renew it, since this is what happened last year when it reached the expiry date.

I don't have that much money, so if it's in the thousands, I may not be able to afford it. The problem is that the business would be dependent on having that specific name, so if I can't get it, I can't really go ahead with the idea.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Namebright is a registrar, so the name might just be held there. What you need to check is the whois for the domain and see if they own it.

Namebright sells their owned domains through their affiliated company, HugeDomains.com and usually has a listed price. We've been successful with negotiating with them in the past, but don't expect them to drop their prices too much.

If it's not owned by Namebright, you should see either the owner's info in the whois or a privacy email. You can try contacting them to see if they would be willing to sell or you can contact a broker for help.

google the domain name.
often it'll bring up who is and contact info of owner.
phone him or email him then.

Thanks for your advice! I had previously done a whois on the website. The Registrar is domainwards, and whilst the registrant name says it's a private organisation, the address happens to be 2635 Walnut Street, the same address as domainwards, hugedomains and namebright, which all seem to be one company. Would this suggest that they are indeed the owners? I've checked on hugedomains and the domain name isn't for sale there.

I guess it's just a matter of contacting them- are they flexible with regards to negiotiating price or do they play hardball? In terms of brokers, are there any particularly suitable for someone in my position, or are they all pretty much the same? Are brokers paid for the whole service, or only if and when they acquire the domain?

Thanks again and sorry for such basic questions

Well just send them email and ask for the price. Dont try to look more pro than you are. And dont even think of telling them your story - that on this domain depends you whole business idea etc. In that case, they will skyrocket the price.
Good luck!
