Hi everyone

I am looking to build a website that offers help and guidance about overcoming all sorts of addictions. I want to provide personal experiences, testimonies from others, YouTube videos and TED Talks, a resources and recommended reading page and, yes, use adsense for revenue (I also plan on making YouTube videos so will have adsense on there too).

My main question is this - would it be legal for me to do this?

My concern is that I'm not a health professional. I'm not a therapist either. I'm basically not qualified in this area. However what I do want to do is create a site that can help others learn from my experiences and raise awareness of certain addictions which people underestimate.

My thinking is that if I create a disclaimer stating something like "This website is intended to share experiences and opinions of its creator. Whilst we hope you find it useful, you should seek professional help when it comes to addiction and not rely on the content of this site. This site does not take any responsibility for your health."

Can anyone please advise or point me at where I can be clear on how to cover myself, and whether I can even make the site to begin with?

Hi There

There is nothing illegal about creating a site like that... Good idea actually, it's a massive niche as well that can generate substantial traffic..

Yes, you are spot on with regards to the disclaimer. As long as you make it clear to your visitors that all information and content on your site is for informational purposes only and that it does not substitute getting proper advice from a medical professional then you are pretty much safe from a legal point of view.

To get a PROPER legal medical disclaimer - check out other health info sites, they will have the proper terminology and structure for a legal disclaimer

Hi deez007, thanks very much for your quickly reply. That's a big relief!

I appreciate your encouragement and advice and will certainly look at other disclaimers.

Read the Adsense TOS very very carefully - they forbid various things such as adult content and drugs and their bots might misinterpret your site. I don't think you would earn a lot from Adsense anyway - is that the reason to create the site?

Hi carob. Thanks for the heads up - no, although I do aim to monetise the site, AdSense is not my only avenue of this because I also want to create YouTube videos and my aim and message for the whole site is about motivating people to overcome addiction. I won't actually put any content that's of an adult nature. Instead I may mention terms like "porn", "alcohol", "gambling" etc. but it's all about getting over it, so I'm not sure if this would help with the AdSense bots?

If you're not promoting illegal drug use, you should be ok for Adsense as far as drug related content.. Not sure where you'll stand if you discuss gambling or p*rn. Reread the policies and ask them.
