.online is growing at a steady pace of about 1.000 a day. Is already in the top 10 in less than a year. Especially popular in Europe. Not popular in China. Number 3 as fastest growing domain name. Very low spam percentage. And the extension is functional, and thus usable to indicate the type of service or product you are offering. If you have flowers.online, everyone will know what to expect when visiting the website.
What would make you think that this domain is totally dead?

I live in Europe and all I see is ccTLDs and .com, sometimes .eu .org .net stuff.
There is not a single site in a new extension that I visit on a regular basis, and I am not alone (more like the majority in fact).

Since you are asking "is .online having any value", I suppose you mean is it good for speculating on. It's not like there is a big aftermarket for these names.
New extensions are the kiss of death for domainers.

Well, long .word domains are dead to me.

Several 3 and 4 letter sales under my belt and more to come.
I say if you can hold on a few months their value will grow steadfastly.

How .ONLINE (and other TLDs) are doing you can study here :
https://namestat.org/online
It's just the raw numbers, it doesn't tell a lot about actual usage. .biz has many more regs but:
  • they hardly sell
  • they are not popular among end users
  • I almost never visit any (can't remember the last)
And it's still considered among the most successful of 'new' extensions. Most domainers wouldn't consider .biz investment-worthy, yet it is far ahead of newer extensions.

I still think it's too long to really catch on. I don't own any.

I sold a couple .online without much effort.
Traded one .online for a online training subscription worth more than $700. Sold another one for $600. Had an offer for the Dutch version of bible.online of $600 (rejected it) and had several price requests for the Dutch version of pharmacy.online.
And I got an offer on mediation[dot]online the day after general availability. However, if the price is not really really good I will use that one for development.

Did you sell to Dutch buyers ? I wouldn't say it's an easy market, because every time I have been to the Netherlands .nl was everywhere, I saw maybe 3 .com (for big companies like Philips or ING) and one .eu, one .org and that's about it.

The subscription trade was with a US company. The 600 was a Dutch company and the offers for the Dutch version of bible and pharmacy were Dutch companies. The offer for mediation was not Dutch, although mediation is also widely used in The Netherlands as a term.
.nl is the most popular extension, but you see companies now slowly turning to ngtld's (at least the ones that make sense) instead of registering an exotic .nl.
For example the Dutch versions of flowers.online, order sushi.online, suitcases.online, horoscope.online, officefurniture.online etc are running a full website. Its still a very small percentage of the total, but its starting. For my business, I have 5 .nl sites running, 1 .com site in development and 2 .online in development. The choice depends on the content of the site.

In the 1+ year since .online's release.. I haven't seen any .online domain being used or advertised anywhere. The only place I see .online is on domainer forums. I think that's a bad sign. Plus, it's too many characters.

Do you even think before you start typing your ngtld-bashing posts?

.biz was introduced in 2001..... 15 years ago...... at a time when there were far fewer alternatives available..... of course it has more regs than most of the hundreds of new extensions that were dumped on us in a short amount of time....

Obviously ya don't bet on a boring, 15 year old horse that has never showed much potential... ya bet on the promising young foals of today, and tomorrow.

.biz's day (however insignificant) is loooong past, so it's truly bizarre to compare it to the new gtld's.

I think it's time for some new ammo.

In the 1+ year since .online's release..
.online general availability began August 26, 2015.... less than 11 months ago.

Personally I love .ONLINE domains..even people who does not command good English do understand what does ONLINE mean. I think it is far from dead at the moment. What the future will be is of course hard to say, but that for sure does not prevent me from securing some good names while they are still affordably priced ;)

I must say I am not a big fan of .ONL..it has horrible radio test..like one would need to spell it, or what?:)
This is the example where I would prefer longer .ONLINE to shorter .ONL..

I don't see perspectives for .online when .web will be launched...

I have a bunch of .online domains and really like them.
When I replace .online with .web in my domains, they don't make sense anymore and sound bad.

Sorry, but I don't invest in "likes"...

Unless your domain is something like spider.web, dotweb is an absolutely terrible gtld. Twenty years ago, it could have seen some success... but today? No comparison.
