Post Setup Own Domain Name On Server 2008 r2

    Hi,

I have a windows server 2008 r2 running on my old laptop and i have successfully configured my website on it and i tried using my website from my public ip which is assigned by my isp but all the time i have to write my public ip address to view my site.

I want to have own Domain so that from anywhere in the world i write www.domainname.com it takes me to my website rather typing http://publicip

Looking forward for your earliest and positive reply to help me.

    Thanks

How should i setup a domain on my windows server 2008 r2?

Do i need to buy a domain? or how this works?

    Hey,

You would need to purchase a domain name from a registrar such as ENOM, after this you would be able to set the A record (IP address) and nameservers in your DNS settings. Since you are using your home IP, you will need to ensure that this is a static IP, please note that propogation may take upto 24 hours.

Thank you for such an early reply back. Is it necessary to purchase a domain?

And as you mentioned to set A record ip address and nameserver in my DNS setting that will be on my server or on wherever i am buying domain from for example Godaddy i have to change the setting there.

Yes i am using home Ip which is my internal ip how do i set it up on my external ip? will that reflect on my public ip which i purchased from my isp?

Is there any other alternative to get free domain name?

Even though just for christ sake i buy the domain can i add sub-domains in it?

I especially made my home server for websites project so buying alot of domains doesnt make any sense to me?(Can you give me some suggestion)

Thank you once again.I appreciate your reply

Yes, you will need to purchase a domain name as you are not a registrar. Once you purchase it you can add as many sub-domains as you would like. You can check your IP here : wayfip.com

If you don't plan on actually putting this live you can just continue to use the IP address

If you set-up an e-mail server or e-mail server software on your Windows Server, you can use the DNS settings of your domain name to set an MX (mail exchanger) record to your public IP address to ensure e-mail receiving works. So yes, this is all possible with a domain name and a 100% publicly accessible server. Do note that you'd need to port forward all ports required for e-mail servers if you run the server behind a NAT router. Next to that, it is also possible to obtain a free domain. A free .tk domain name can be obtained over at Freenom.com for example. Please note that a free domain name is not recommended as it is not as professional as a paid one but for home usage it would certainly do.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Do you have any knowledge about VPN and fax server?

Hiya, there are lots of options out there when it comes to VPN and even under that umbrella term differences occur. My company has had really positive dealings with EXA VPN. Their set-up process is also straightforward. They are really brilliant at responding to questions with clear answers to ensure your need are satisfied so it might be worth having a look...https://exavpn.com/frequently-asked-questions/ Hope that helps.
