Renewal rates, premium sales and more shed light on the .global top level domain name.
The .Global top level domain name just turned 2, and the company has released some interesting data to mark the occasion.
It can be difficult to get good data on new top level domains, especially from companies that are not public.
Perhaps the most intriguing dataset is a list of all of the premium .global domain names that have been sold. It’s only 253 (out of 27,000 registrations), but this stat is interesting in and of itself.
You’ll note that the majority of premium domain names sold post-launch have been sold through the registrar channel (EPP). Some top level domain name companies started by selling the majority of their premium inventory direct or through a marketplace. It has become clear that selling through the registrar channel is the winning strategy.
.Global’s 253 premiums sold so far have been for an average of $2,751, which means they have generated about $700,000. The top domain sales are think.global ($30,000), education.global (30,000), casino.global ($28,000) and business.global ($25,000).
The company says that first-year renewal rates were 68%. It expects second-year renewal rates to be higher.
There are just 1.2 domain names per unique registrant, which implies that .global is reaching end users instead of just domain investors. This is unsurprising given the premium pricepoint for .global. Although some retailers have offered discounts, the list price is about $99.
John McCormac says
The claimed website development percentages are don’t seem to be reliable (based on an August 2016 web usage survey of all new gTLDs) but renewals-wise, it is doing rather well.
Andrew Allemann says
Every registry measures website usage differently. I can’t imagine it being more than a few percent for most of these TLDs.
John McCormac says
The problem is that some registries don’t know how to measure it. Some of the new gTLDs have extremely low usage (<5%). The range tends to be between 5% and 20% for newly launched TLDs. Some of the new gTLDs have exceeded expectations.

185K Icann renewal fee vs 700K in renewals this is a winning strategy period.
Ryan says
If you claim a high end user audience then 68% renewal is a dismal number.

Great stats for a newbie
go.global ! 😉
31% domains have fully developed websites (not counting parking or landing pages)
Only 4.8 % forwards to other domain names, implying that the .GLOBAL domain is mostly being used as a primary domain name for online branding.
John says
@168 …. Where did you get that info? Link please.
John McCormac says
It is from the link in the first paragraph of the article but those percentages on usage do not seem right.
