DNS Nameservers-Use WHM/Cpanel, or use 3rd party service?

Trying to understand what the best way to set up nameservers is for a domain? I've been on the cpanel platform now for many years and have always had custom nameservers right on the cpanel/whm account. A friend told me he always uses a 3rd party nameserver for reliability and the abilty to change the DNS if a failure ever occurs if secondary ones aren't already set up.

So do most of you use what is included with a VPS/Reseller and set them up on your server, or do yo use a 3rd party service like Amazon's DNS, Google DNS, or one of the other DYN or popular service.

What is the most ideal way?

If your host runs dns cluster with cpanel, it's fine as it is redundant. It will also save your time when adding new subdomain(s)

Can you explain what you mean about a dns cluster? One of my hosts basically allows me to have whatever DNS I want to create for my choice of domains, and said that I can use 2 IP's for multiple DNS on different domains. Is this a DNS Cluster?

It means the DNS reside in two or more servers, not just IP, as one server can has several IPs.
Ask your host if they run DNS cluster, if not better use third party.

I always prefer 3rd party DNS. A clustered cPanel DNS configuration is fine unless the cluster has some single point of failure. For most casual users this is not an issue. If your DNS goes down and your email and website are on the same server as your DNS then your services are down anyway. When it matters is when you have spread out your services. Using Google Apps (GSuite) or Office 365 for your email is a perfect example. I can take the hit if my website goes down but if it takes my DNS service with it there goes my email too. No thanks. Don't get me wrong, there are several hosts that use true DNS clusters that are geographically dispersed, I just prefer not to keep my eggs all in one basket.

also consider using your domain registrar's dns, if it is available.

hmmm. would that be 2nd-party dns?
