I only ask this because we all know the almighty Google is pretty amazing and knows EXACTLY what it

...so, why does Google list my grandfather's obituary several times in the first few pages of Google? Google also lists my World of Warcraft account on a gaming profile for my BM Hunter.

    /confused rant on

I checked with my iPhone in "Incognito" mode to strip any personalizing (I think) and used Internet Explorer that never gets used for anything else on my desktop, except to check SERPs, I don't log into anything with it, so it shouldn't have personalized results I would think.

My grandfather was just my grandfather, he isn't famous, he has "zero" social media accounts, he died a few years back, and he could barely use a remote control to change the channels -- technology wasn't any part of his life growing up, just a guy who lived and died in Kansas.

So, Google knows if you have one tiny inconsistency in your NAP, and let's face it, obituaries are very detailed. I didn't live anywhere he lived, I was in JAPAN for 13 years and CHINA off and on for 2 years up until 2015. I think it has been 35 years since I saw him last, so no reunion pictures or similar. He was a methodist minister, I was in the Marines, so, there no real similarities with anything besides our names.

Oh, and my World of Warcraft profile is #3 for my name. World of Warcraft beats everything but my Linkedin and my Photography Facebook page. I haven't even played WoW for a year, and during that time I didn't even play at all really.

Did Google's recent updates change something that I am not seeing? I mean, even my Slideshare, my profiles on photography forums -- which I was very involved in over the years and have press releases published about me by quality and known organizations.....get's beat by my World of Warcraft BM hunter, ummm, ok Google, time to lay off the booze and roll back your last update....!!

Granted, I don't Google my name at all, just when I need to make sure a post was indexed or to find older references and discussions, so I am pretty sure I would have seen 4 obituaries and a my Hunter profile at some point. I followed the Q4 Penguin updates here on Digitalpoint, and over to Search Engline Land. I am not sure if I am seeing personalized results that I never noticed in the past, results of AMP and the movement toward mobile & speed, or something related to Penguin.

Incognito in Safari does keep the IP, and that would mean the region, but none of that can compare to 13+ years of published work, press, and awards recognitions.

1 to 2 years in Denver & Boulder, Colorado combined with 13 years in Japan + 2 years in China teaching....I just can't see how a video game profile for my BM Hunter could have any chance at all. Oh, and I never once played WoW in Boulder, which is the IP address that Safari shows.

Well... for starters - both the obituary site and the gaming site are probably authority sites. (Not saying that linkedin/facebook aren't....) I suspect the power of facebook/linkedin authority pages may have some artificial penalties so it's not too easy to game things. But the bottom line for a good ranking is usually good detailed unique content that does not look spammy on a good authority site.

I agree, but I have seen people trying to find any high Pagerank links in the past (PR6, PR 7) and not caring about the content as long as it wasn't gambling, porn, stuff like this. These discussions often time lead to a very simple answer -- a "contextual" link of PR1 is better than a PR7 that has no content similarities. I could be wrong, this was in 2006 or 2007 when backlink wars were waged everywhere. I "think" the Delicious blog page was PR9 and "dofollow" and that blog was on fire every friigin second, because the new comments were listed about the fold. I didn't take the Delicios staff very long to change to nofollow.

What were your search terms? Was it your full name? Was your name mentioned in the obit?
