Hey guys,

A domain lawyer (Attorney) contacted me today regarding a .nyc domain I purchased in October.
I don't think he realizes the fact that I can't sell .nyc domain to a third party... Yet.

He offered me $100.00 I think the domain contains much more value than his proposed offer.
In this case, do I have to hire a domain lawyer to contact him or can I speak to him directly?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Hire a lawyer for $100 ? You need to raise up the ante to make the consulation fee worthwhile :) I think it's ok to contact him directly. You are not being sued here. You don't need a lawyer I think, unless he's making threats or calling you a squatter right.

Send me a PM with the domain, I've been down this road with new extensions and have already hired attorneys and TM attorneys. Maybe I can help.

It could be that it isn't even a lawyer.
Or it could be a lawyer with a budget far beyond $100.

Either way, no one would hire a lawyer for a measly $100 purchase.

If research shows that it's a lawyer, counter high.
If there is reason to believe it's an imposter, then walk away.
That scammer would only waste your time.

Hiring a lawyer is not necessary.

If you don't want to sell with $100, then send your min offer?

You were contacted with a small offer to purchase??
If so, it was for the lawyer's own personal use.
The fact that he was a lawyer was incidental.

When you say "read my posts" do you mean this:
Send me a PM with the domain, I've been down this road with new extensions and have already hired attorneys and TM attorneys. Maybe I can help.
Cuz if you do, then done.
But, the op never mentioned a TM issue.
So I assumed that you were consdering the content of the thread.
Not just tilting at windmills.

Question: I contacted ownit.nyc, which runs .nyc, and they told me that it can be transferred at any time, as long as it's with the same registrant, so for example, transferring it from godaddy to a buyer who has godaddy should not be a problem. How long were you told you have to wait?

I was talking to the OP, not you. I thought the OP was contacted by an attorney about the domain because of issues and therefore offered a low figure to avoid litigation. My misunderstanding..

I guess the attorney wants to by the domain from what I gather..

Hi guys, mad409 is correct.
I was contacted by an attorney few months ago. He basically tried to scare me and telling me to hand over the domain because it's trade marked. I told him I wasn't planning on infringe on their TM. He said he disagree with me and then he stopped contacting me.

After couple months (few days ago) he contacts me again to offer 100. Maybe he's trying to look good in front of his client I don't know but he is an attorney.

I'm not sure how long I have to wait. All I know is I can't sell at this point.

Attorney is hired by a company with TM.

Just checked again, and it looks like you can sell at any time as long as the person you're selling to is with the same registrar.

Attorney is hired by a company with TM.

So probably he invoices them per email or per hour.

If he wants to acquire the name, he could offer to compensate you for your loss. In other words, you had plans to develop the name (in a way that does not infringe anyone's trademark). So he compensates you for those, you get the money, but he has not paid for the domain itself.

I planned to develop and the work is coming along however, I am feeling very pressured by the lawyer at this moment. He's being a professional and talks to me in a nicer way than before (because I made sure to let him understand that I am not trying to infringe upon their TM) but still feel pressured. If I do not wish to exchange the domain with $, should I just tell him I want 100k? ... Do you think that will get him mad and sue me for whatever reasons he can't think of?
I just think there is so much potential in the domain name, I think down the road it will worth a lot of money..
